Reviews

Engal Aasaan is a suspense thriller based on the story taking place in a village. The story revolves around the country's banking system. A big majority of the unlettered rural masses are still unaware of the working of the banks and so they are not able to take advantage of the benefits of banking. Protagonist Vijayakanth (Mahendran) takes on himself the mission of creating awareness among the villagers about the facilities provided by the banks and also works to raise the standard of living of the rural people.

Seril Brindo, who played an important character role in Vijayakanth-starrer "Arasangam", is the heroine in "Engal Aasaan".

Vikranth and 'Kalaba Kadalan' Ashaya act as the young lovers. There is a 'kuthu' dance featuring Suja, who also has a crush on Vikranth, but her love is one-sided.

Unlike "Arasangam", this film has punch dialogues by Vijayakanth in every scene. Seril Brindo is featured as the village head. Director Kalaimani says Brindo plays her role with gusto and her acting skill is on full display. He would not be surprised if she wins an award, he adds.

The story is narrated in the backdrop of romance. But there is no bloodshed, no sound of gunfire and no bomb blasts, says Kalaimani.

A new face, Ramki, is making his debut as villain. The first half of the film has been shot in Chennai and the second half in Pollachi. It has two songs picturised in Australia.

While Sabesh-Murali has scored the music, A. Venkatesh has handled the camera. The lyrics are by Muthulingam, Pa. Vijay and Snegan. The others in the production team are: Velumani (dialogue), Jana (art), Salim (editing).

"Sundara Travels" and "Meesai Madhavan" were from the stables of Yuvasri Pictures.Close on the heels of rave reviews won by Arasangam, Vijayakanth started works for his new movie Engal Asan, a film in which he plays a bank manager who comes to a remote village and finds himself in the grip of feudal money-lenders.

His bank lends money to farmers at government approved rates, wins their confidence and transforms the village. In Engal Asan Vijays cousin Vikranth will play second lead and is likely to do all the romance with two leading ladies Suja and Akshya.

The film has a music score by Sabesh Murali and is directed by Kalaimani. To be produced by Sundara Travels Thangaraj, the movie features actress Sheryl Brindo, who acted with Vijayakanth as a heroine in Arasangam. Vivek plays a comedian in a Vijayakanth movie after a long gap.

Engal Asan boasts of a huge star- cast which includes Kadhal Dhandapani, Ilavarasu, Mayilsamy, Muthukalai and Madhan Bob. A debutant Ramki plays the baddie in the movie. Cinematography is by A Venkatesh.Captain is back. It's been quite a while since we saw him on screen which is quite understandable because he is a man of many other commitments too. However, Engal Aasan is ready for release, a trifle delayed though.

But it looks as though the delay might end up helping the movie. Engal Aasan is a story based on a big economic scandal where fake documents are fabricated to show issue of loans to people while the money is siphoned off by others. The scam is to the tune of a few crores. Well, if
Engal Aasan
this reminds you of India’s biggest corporate fraud then don't think that Engal Aasan was made with that in mind.

Vijayakanth plays a bank officer who takes charge in a village office and after a few days starts noticing huge discrepancies in the way funds have been dispensed as loans. He wants to get to the root of the scam. But, the bad elements destroy all evidence that he has and even put him on the wrong side of the management. But Captain does not accept defeat and that is what the movie is all about.

Vikranth (Vijay's cousin), Sheryl Printo and Akshaya are also part of the cast. The film has been directed by Kalaimani with camera handled by A. Venkatesh and Sabesh Murali scoring the music.
