Thoota is a dubbed version of Tamil Movie Thotta. Thoota is a gangster movie with a love story in this movie jeevan plays a role of gang leader and makes a lot of money by executing murders for money. The officer becomes commissioner and indulges in all sort of shady activities with the help of powerful Thotta.Life goes on smoothly till Thotta meets Nalina (Priyamani), who is the daughter of the auto driver. He feels indebted and tries to help the family. He helps her without revealing his real identity. He promises her to get her a job in police department, which is her dream. He seeks the help of his mentor cum police commissioner but he demands her to sleep with him to get the posting. Thotta revolts and subsequently the mentor and the disciple become enemies.
A routine pot boiler masala, the film is about Thotta (Jeevan) who is a gangster and professional killer, he makes his way to the top by making money with contract killings and he is guided in this process by the cop (Sampathraj) who adopts him when he was a orphan. Gradually, the cop becomes the commissioner of police and life goes on smoothly for the master and disciple. Enters Nalina (Priyamani), the beautiful daughter of an auto driver who once saves Thotta when he was a child, Thotta meets Nalina and starts helping her family as a token of gratitude, he also assures Nalina of a job in the police department which is her long standing dream. However things go wrong when the commissioner aggress and puts a condition that Nalina must sleep with him. This enrages Thotta and consequentially, both of them part ways. Then starts a bloody war between the powerful Thotta and the equally strong Commissioner, in this process Thotta loses out on his close friend Giri (Vishnupriyan) and also the rival gang led by Vana Roja (Hema Chowdry) starts creating trouble. What happens in the end? Who emerges as the winner? All this forms the rest of the story.
Director Selva wasted no time in making his point clear, he was looking at a full length masala entertainer and that’s what he gave without doubt. His presentation was realistic, narration was near perfection, and however he focused more on the twists in the story which lost out on the projection of the protagonist. He has been well supported by some good songs and catchy camerawork. The editing has been competent too and so are the other departments except the background score which was sometimes loud and overbearing. Jeevan has come out with an improved performance compared to his earlier films and his body language is positive, however he still needs to work on his expressions. Priyamani added a lot of oomph on the screen and did not show any inhibitions for a skin display. Sampath Raj as the veteran officer did well and Mallika as Giri’s wife looked stoically venomous. Hema Chowdry was good with the negative shade.
A common subject but well handled in the screenplay and story departments. The director ensured that there are enough twists to keep the movie going. While the first half revolved around the boy growing up and getting befriended by the cop and how he turns out to be a cold blooded killer machine. The second half is more on an emotional high with the gang war and violence. The movie keeps the audience busy with its tale and fails to project the lead character as required. However, the film looks good enough to come out with some decent collections at the box office.
