Plot Summary

In 1975 in a small Northern Ireland town, 17-year-old Protestant Alistair Little, assassinated 19-year-old Catholic Jim Griffin. Jim’s murder was witnessed horrifically by his 11-year-old brother, Joe Griffin, and the impact of the death destroyed Joe and his family, who could never come to terms with the loss. Little was arrested, convicted and served 12 years in prison. The film moves from a re-enactment of these tragic, real events to a fictional interpretation of what might happen should these two surviving men ever come face to face over 30 years later.

Review

Lurgan Northern Ireland, 1975. A low level civil war has been underway, with the IRA targeting British loyalists and the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force exacting revenge on Catholics they claim are militant republicans. Alistair Little, 16 is the leader of a UVF cell, eager to be blooded. He and his gang are given the go ahead to kill a young Catholic man, James Griffin, as a reprisal and a warning to others. When the hit is carried out, Joe Griffin – the 11-year-old little brother of the target – watches in horror his brother is shot in the head.

Thirty years later Joe Griffin and Alistair are to meet, on camera, with a view to reconciliation. Alistair has served his sentence, and peace may have been agreed to in N. Ireland, but Joe Griffin is not coming on the program for a handshake. Unbeknownst to the production team, he intends to stick a knife in his brother’s killer – live on air.

Five Minutes of Heaven is a British/Irish television film directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel from a script by Guy Hibbert. The first part reconstructs the killing of 19-year-old Jim Griffin by 17-year-old Alistair Little in 1975, and the second part depicts a fictional meeting between Little and Jim’s brother Joe 33 years later.
The first act depicts a reconstruction of the murder of 19-year-old Jim Griffin by 17-year-old Alistair Little (Mark Davison) on 29 October 1975. Jim’s 11-year-old brother Joe witnesses the killing. Little goes to prison for 12 years. The second act depicts a fictional meeting between Little (Liam Neeson) and Griffin (James Nesbitt) when the two agree to meet for a television documentary 33 years after the murder. Little is unaware that Griffin plans to avenge his brother’s death by killing him. The third act features Little and Griffin discussing their pasts. The last act is of Little looking in the meeting place (Griffin’s old house) and the two begin arguing physically and fighting after Griffin jumps Little from behind. Little tackles Griffin through a window and the two end up lying on the outside pavement. Little shows sign of life first and checks Griffin’s pulse. The two are injured and Little tells Griffin that he is returning to Belfast. Little tells Griffin to kill him because he is ‘nothing’ and wants Griffin to live his life with his daughters. Griffin very shakily lights up a cigarette as Little pulls himself up against a wall and limps down the road.
