Movie Plot
Michael Dougherty's ("Superman Returns," "X2: X-Men United") new horror movie, produced by Bryan Singer. "Trick 'r Treat" is four interwoven stories that take place on Halloween with such characters as a staid high school principal who is a Halloween serial killer, a college-age virgin seeking that special guy, a woman who hates dressing up for Halloween and whose husband is obsession with the holiday and a group of young teens who pull a cruel prank
It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free. The rituals of All Hallows Eve were devised to protect us from their evil mischief, and one small town is about to be taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten. Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick. Costumes and candy, ghouls and goblins, monsters and mayhem... the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly as strange creatures of every variety-human and otherwise-try to survive the scariest night of the year
Review
When you do a google search, the first thing that comes up on the suggestion box is “Trick R Treat release date” and that’s because the film has been done since 2006 and for the last 2 years has been in release hell. Last night we got a chance to see this movie on the big screen before it hits DVD on October 6th. I will tell you that ‘Trick R Treat’ should be REQUIRED viewing on every Halloween. I can easily say that this is THE greatest Halloween film of all time.
The story is 4 interlaced events that all happen on Halloween in what would seem like your typical suburban town. The story could have taken place anywhere, but it was shot in Vancouver. The opens with one of the stories and from there they shoot back to earlier times to see how each story connects. The first story features a couple who comes home after a night of partying, a principal that moonlights as a serial killer, a teenager who is looking to lose her virginity, and a story revolving around a group of teenage kids.
The stories are tied together flawlessly, but to save any spoilers from ruining it for you I wont delve into much more detail than that. I will tell you that the film stars Leslie Bibb, Anna Paquin, Brian Cox, Dylan Baker, and Tahmoh Penikett and each of them is freaking fantastic in this movie. The killer in the film(mostly) is this little small guy that is running around in a pumpkin head(not that one) costume and shows up randomly. He is really short, stalks around and just generally creeps everyone out.
Mike Dougherty wrote the screenplay for the film and wanted to have 4 different directors do each version of the story. He mentions in our interview that at one point he had Carpenter and Romero signed on to do a part of the story but the studio scoffed at it. Eventually he decided to step up to the plate and direct it himself. What you will see on October 6th is going to blow you away with its brilliance and sheer creepiness. After watching the film, I walked out and said “Seriously WB, what the hell took so long?
Trick 'r Treat is the holy grail of Halloween themed horror films. Not because of the notoriously long path writer-director Michael Dougherty's film has had to take to finally get released (a refresher: TrT was finished and first shown back in 2007 and, despite an overwhelming reaction to its first public exhibition, proceeded to be locked away in a vault at Warner Brothers for unspecified reasons), though that did turn it into a rare find to be coveted. No, Dougherty's film is such a treasure because it is Halloween. It just had the misfortune of being born a decade too late, of being born into a time when studios only care about remakes or sequels and certainly not about anthology films. Dougherty had, as far as a studio is concerned, the audacity to finely craft, gasp, an original, American horror film.
Wrong-decade misfortune that may be, however, it's great to be able to say that Trick 'r Treat will still be watched on Halloween for decades to come. Those who love it, like I, will still be watching it with great devotion. Those who merely liked it will not be able to help themselves from putting it on as background to their Halloween parties. And those who hated it, well, those who hated it don't exist. They can't exist. To hate Trick 'r Treat would be to hate the entire spirit of Halloween, a spirit Dougherty apparently has complete domain over.
