Kassim the Dream: Hollywood Movie Review
Kassim Ouma has, to say the least, an unusual life story. Nicknamed the Dream, this 30-year-old boxer, a former world champion, was kidnapped at 6 by a Ugandan rebel army and pressed into duty as a child soldier.
More About This Movie
Mr. Ouma witnessed unimaginable atrocities. He committed torture and murder. His childhood was more than lost, it was sacrificed to a living nightmare.
His angst found an outlet in the army’s boxing team. He excelled at the sport, and when his team traveled to the United States for a tournament, he defected and quickly found fame.
The filmmaker Kief Davidson recounts this vivid tale in the dull documentary "Kassim the Dream." Despite Mr. Ouma’s good cheer and unrelenting charm, his present-day life is ho-hum boxing stardom fare: joshing with his posse, rolling the Escalade, smoking blunts, backstage bonhomie and braggadocio, triumph, setback and glorious victory.
Mr. Davidson varies this material with grossly lyrical re-creations of the Ugandan terror: high-gloss images of kids with guns, moodily lighted tableaus of pensive rebels.
The documentary finds some narrative drive through Mr. Ouma’s quest to return home to Uganda. When he finally does, the catharsis is palpable, but not nearly enough to counter the rest of this featherweight saga.
KASSIM THE DREAM

This is the story of World Champion Boxer, Kassim "The Dream" Ouma - born in Uganda, kidnapped by the rebel army and trained to be a child soldier at the age of 6. When the rebels took over the government, Kassim became an army soldier who was forced to commit many horrific atrocities, making him both a victim and perpetrator. He soon discovered the army's boxing team and realized the sport was his ticket to freedom. After 12 years of warfare, Kassim defected from Africa and arrived in the United States. Homeless and culture shocked, he quickly rose through the boxing ranks and became Junior Middleweight Champion of the World. Kassim, now age 27, seems to have obtained the American Dream with his jovial nature, fame and hip hop lifestyle. As Kassim trains for his next world title fight against Jermain Taylor in Little Rock Arkansas, keeping his demons out of the ring becomes increasingly difficult. His desires to reunite with family in Uganda intensify when Kassim's only hope for a safe return is a military pardon from the president and government responsible for his abduction.
While it’s probably a truism that every great boxer’s life is full of stories of triumph over tragedy and success against the odds, not many will have quite the excruciating, tragic and meandering path to success that World Champion boxer Kassim "The Dream" Ouma did. Kidnapped into a rebel army in Uganda when he was only six–years–old and forced to use drugs, violence and war as a way of life, Kassim Uma faced a dismal path of death and destruction until he seized an opportunity to escape the only world he knew. But like every dark cloud, there was a silver lining: surrounding Kassim’s nebulous reality was boxing. Escaping from Uganda, Kassim’s boxing training from his days as a soldier first led him to a gym in the Bay area and later to Philadelphia. This intimate documentary chronicles a triumphant, emotional and political saga. It shows how unpredictable life is and how true champions emerge from the most challenging of circumstances. -- Nicole Ross
Plenty of professional sports stars have had to overcome adversity to achieve success, but few have had to struggle against the harrowing circumstances that met Kassim "the Dream" Ouma in his childhood. Born in Uganda in 1978, Ouma was one of 13 siblings; he was born into poverty and sent to a boarding school where, at the age of six, he was abducted along with most of his classmates by rebel soldiers under the leadership of Yoweri Museveni. The soldiers taught Ouma how to kill, maim and torture others, and he was forced to inflict punishment under the threat of death. Museveni became Uganda's president in 1986 and Ouma was drafted into the military as soon as he came of age; while a soldier, he began taking boxing lessons. Ouma had a great natural talent as a fighter, and became a star on the army's boxing team. But Ouma dreamed of a better life, and when Uganda's national team traveled to compete in America, he defected, seeking asylum in the United States. Despite having no money and not speaking a word of English, 18-year-old Ouma was welcomed by Africans in the American boxing community, and manager Tom Moran took Ouma under his wing and into his home. Ouma went on to become Light Middleweight champion and a top middleweight contender in a professional career that saw him win 24 of his 29 fights. Filmmaker Kief Davidson tells Ouma's remarkable true story in the documentary Kassim the Dream, in which Ouma talks about his ravaged childhood, coming to America, his return to Uganda, and how boxing became his therapy as he deals with the demons of his past. Kassim the Dream was an official selection at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide
