Three Thai films are opening this week in Bangkok cinemas, and none of them are from the major studios.
Probably the most promising of the three is the purely indie feature,
Boring Love - เซ็งเป็ด Thai Movie Review :
Ped and Oiy work at an airline. Oiy, who is gay, wants more than just friendship with Ped, but his heart as well. Ped, who has just broken up with his girlfriend, tries to get Oiy out of life, as he can't accept being gay.
He draws closer to Oiy without realising it, as he sympathises with his plight, and Oiy is a good friend at least.
However, acting on his old instincts he sets up a meeting between his old girlfriend, Kai, and Oiy, in the hope Kai can persuade him to go straight. Kai secretly fancies Oiy, and fancies her chances of converting him.
Oiy discovers the meeting was a set-up. Feeling betrayed and rejected, he leaves Ped's life, just as Ped had wanted.
However, once Oiy has gone, Ped discovers he can't live without Oiy, and was much closer to his friend than he realised...
The story started life as a series of posts which 'Ped' published about his perplexing love life at the Pantip webboard two years ago. The opening lines are memorable, and have popped up on many websites since: 'I am not gay! Why are you flirting with me?’
The story, which ran for four months, was so popular with the Pantip crowd that Anit Publishing turned it into a pocket book, which became a best-seller. Now it is being made into an indie film.
Seng Ped has just one star in its cast: Cartoon Intira Ketworasoontorn, who in the opening scenes must strip. The director asked a stand-in to do the naughty scenes, sparing her the embarrassment.
She appears alongside two male leads, acting newcomers Nattaphon Nillpoom (left in the group shot), who plays Ped, and Attiwat Lumkool, who plays his friend Oiy (ณัฐพล นิลภูมิ และ อธิวัฒน์ ลำกูล).
The film is showing at the Lido cinema only, opening on Nov 29. It was launched before the media late last month. As it is made on a low-budget, the film probably won’t have sub-titles. See more stills and a clip
