Thirty years ago, Andrei Simoniovich Filipov, the renowned conductor of the Bolshoi orchestra, was fired for hiring Jewish musicians. Now a mere cleaning man at the Bolshoi, he learns by accident that the Châtelet Theater in Paris invites the Bolshoi orchestra to play there. He decides to gather together his former musicians and to perform in Paris in the place of the current Bolshoi orchestra. As a solo violin player to accompany his old Jewish or Gypsy musicians he wants Anne-Marie Jacquet, a young virtuoso. Le Concert Hollywood Movie Review :this is a lousy movie. it has a gripping ending because the ending shows a very melodramatic and emotionally absorbing performance of some of the knockout parts of the tschiakovsky violin concerto in super sound. laced into the film are several sure fire issues, soviet repression of artists and jews, the reemergence of the oppressed and of the stories about those who did not survive the regime's punishments after the end of the soviet union, a mystery about someone's identity, a triumph when a defeat seemed likely, etc.
but the issues are not developed with grace and insight. there is nothing admirable about the mise en scene. shouting or whispering generally replaces acting. the issues are ploys of the plot to seduce the emotions of the audience. most of the film is inauthentic and exploitative, loud and noisy, vulgar and heavy handed, a waste of time.
it's neither as good as a good Hollywood picture, nor is it a film in the least worthy to be considered among the good works of the European art cinema.
The film can be simply categorised as an 'unlikely success story' packed with laughs generated by portraying Russians and life in Russia by overusing clichés. That may be, but it's so much more. It's funny and yet it's also incredibly sad (if you just think about things). The way french and Russian languages are nicely used (to a lot of comical effect), especially since many actors aren't Russian.
Mélanie Laurent is better used in here than in Inglorious Basterds - and is surprisingly convincing. Most importantly it manages to not bore someone who's not even a casual listener of classical music with the final concerto. Quite the contrary. This has never happened to me while watching a movie, but during the long final Tchaikovski scene, there were some emotions stirred. Heck, I'm considered quite the cold 'bastard', but the music moved me in some way. Hard to explain.tags:
