Haneulgwa Bada:Korean Movie Reviews

Ha-neul (played by Na-ra Jang) is a gifted violonist who stays at home mostly. Bada (played by Jyu-ni Hyeon) was abandoned by her parents. Jin-kyu (played by Ah-in Yu) lost his parents at an early age and now delivers pizza. Through music, friendship, and love these three friends will learn lessons on life.
Notes
1. "Haneul" (name of character played by Na-ra Jang) means literally "sky" in Korean, and "Bada" (name of character played by Jyu-ni Hyeon) means literally "ocean" or "sea" in Korean.
2. One scene will take place in the desert and will be filmed on location in China on May 8th.
3. Staff members filed a lawsuit against production company Christmas Entertainment () for non-payment of wages. Co-producer Oh-seong Ju (also the real life father of Na-ra Jang) told Korean media that during production of "Sky & Ocean" money was tight, but they are now actively negotiating to pay the unpaid staff members.[1]
4. According to an October 21st posting made by Oh-seong Ju on his daughter's website, (narajjang.com), an anonymous female fan donated 100 million Won ($86,000 USD) to the cash strapped movie production company to promote "Sky & Ocean" and fulfill other expenses.
5. "Sky & Ocean" received nominations for "Best Film" and "Best Actress" at the upcoming 2009 Daejong Film Awards. These choices were somewhat controversial because the nominations came prior to the movie's release & the selection of Na-ra Jang for "Best Actress" over actress Ji-won Ha (for her performances in "Haeundae" & "Closer to Heaven"). In response to the criticism the Daejong Film Awards released a press statement stating that films can be nominated prior to their release date if submitted by a certain date and because Ji-won Ha appeared in two popular movies her votes were most likely split among those two separate films.[2]
6. "Sky & Ocean" opened #9 at the South Korean box office during its opening Oct. 30th - Nov. 1st weekend. The movie sold 9,952 tickets on 224 screens and accounted for 0.9% of all tickets sold that weekend.
7. On November 9th, through (narajjang.com) it was announced that "Sky & Ocean" would be pulled from all theaters effective immediately. In the announcement two primary reasons were given: 1.) difficulties in gaining screening slots for entire days (the film was shown either at night only and during the afternoon only - depending on the cinema's split screen schedule) and 2.) harsh media criticisms on the film relating to its poor box office showing and the surprising "Best Film" and "Best Actress" nominations at the 2009 Daejong Film Awards.
8. Altogether "Sky & Ocean" sold a total of 17,859 tickets and stayed in the weekend top ten for 1 week.
9. Actor Ah-in Yu came out publicly on November 9th via his Cyworld homepage to speak out against the movie's producer Oh-seong Ju (who is also the father of the movie's main actress Na-ra Jang). In Ah-in Yu's Nov. 9th Cyworld post, he criticized Oh-seong Ju for overstepping his duties as a producer on the movie set. Ah-in Yu stated that Oh-seong Ju would frequently hold the bullhorn and direct when to cut scenes, as well as dominating the direction for the final concert scene in the movie. Ah-in Yu also criticized Oh-seong Ju for his recent public statements blaming the media and the movie's inability to screen for entire days as reasons for the movie's commercial failings. Rather than blaming external sources Ah-in Yu stated the the staff should reflect on their own shortcomings. Also Ah-in Yu complained that he was not notified the movie was being pulled from the theaters. Following Ah-in Yu's public statements, Oh-seong Ju conducted an interview with Star News in which he refuted Ah-in Yu's claims and also stated he considered taking legal actions against Ah-in Yu, but his daughter persuaded him not too. Oh-seong Ju also criticized Ah-in Yu for not making promotional appearances on behalf of the film.

Karaoke is most commonly called "Noraebang" (, literally, "song room") in Korea, but the Japanese-derived Garaoke/Karaoke (/) and various Korean alternatives like Norae yeonseupjang (), or Norae yeonseupshil () are also sometimes used. Noraebang is even conducted in transport vehicles such as tourist buses. Noraebang is the equivalent to the Karaoke-Box in Japan, whereas singing before an audience of a karaoke bar is called Karaoke () in Korea.

Since the success of the Korean film Shiri in 1999, Korean film has become much more popular, both in South Korea and abroad. Today South Korea is one of the few countries where Hollywood productions do not enjoy a dominant share of the domestic market. This fact, however, is partly due to the existence of screen quotas requiring cinemas to show Korean films at least 73 days a year.
Shiri was a film about a North Korean spy preparing a coup in Seoul. The film was the first in Korean history to sell more than two million tickets in Seoul alone. This helped Shiri to surpass box office hits such as The Matrix and Star Wars. The success of Shiri motivated other Korean films with larger budgets.
In 2000 the film Joint Security Area was a huge success and even surpassed the benchmark set by Shiri. One year later, the film Friend managed the same. In South Korea the romantic comedy My Sassy Girl outsold The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter which ran at the same time. The director of Joint Security Area has gone on to direct many popular films in Korea and abroad especially the cult film of 2003, Oldboy. Kim Ki-Duk is also a well respected filmmaker and is known for using minimal dialogue between characters to create an emotional response from the audience. He is known especially for 3-Iron and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring. As of 2004, new films continue to break records, and many Korean productions are more popular than Hollywood films. Both Silmido and Taegukgi (The Brotherhood) were watched by over 10 million people, which is a quarter of the Korean population. Silmido is a film based on a true story about a secret special force. The other is a blockbuster movie about the Korean War directed by the director of Shiri. The Host (2006) part monster movie, part social satire broke Korean box office records and has become fairly popular in the United States as well.
This success attracted the attention of Hollywood. Films such as Shiri are now distributed in the United States. In 2001, Miramax even bought the rights to an Americanized remake of the successful Korean action comedy movie, My Wife is a Gangster.
Many Korean films reflect the unique circumstances of the division of Korea. Many of the critically acclaimed films focus on subtle emotions, inviting comparison to French films, but with the recent international successes and growing budgets, the Korean film industry has also been criticized for mimicking Hollywood blockbusters.
