DC United: Watch out for "old man winter" on D.C. United. Jaime Moreno played 12 years younger than his age indicates, as he scored all five goals for United in the Carolina Challenge Cup last week. The 36 year old did his damage while starting and from the bench, and he might start the game against Kansas City. At the other end of the field, United's defense has been in stellar form throughout the preseason. In three games at the Challenge Cup, United allowed just one goal, which was from the penalty spot.
Kansas City: It's actually hard to say who is on form. Kansas City ended its preseason by facing off with a college side and, as expected, they were runaway winners. Still, the signs are good that the squad will come into the opening match playing well, at least on the attacking end. Davy Arnaud looks primed for a big season and Josh Wolfe seems to be back to his old self. Kei Kamara is always a threat and rookie Teal Bunbury should also provide some goals. Off Target
DC United: The rest of United's strikers. While Moreno was rolling back the clock by scoring goal after goal in the preseason, United got little production from any other striker on their roster. New boys Danny Allsopp and Adam Cristman struggled to find the net, as did Chris Pontius. Unlike in years past, chances might be somewhat of a premium for United, considering their lack of classic #10 playmaker. So United will need plenty of efficiency in front of the net, something that United's strikers failed to provide in the preseason.
Kansas City: Again, it's hard to say at this point. Jimmy Conrad may have the most to prove after his winter debacle with the USA, but the Wizards defense was rarely tested in the later stages of the preseason. There are still questions at the back, and if Conrad is not on top form the team will suffer from it.
Tactics
DC United: Over the years, with the various coaches in charge, United has been in favor of a 3-5-2 formation. However, with Curt Onalfo's arrival, there will be a change to a more classic 4-4-2 formation. Another staple in United's history has been the classic #10 playmaker, such as Marco Etcheverry and Christian Gomez. However, there is no such player on United's roster now. Santino Quaranta will likely lineup in the middle as a box to box midfielder, but he won't be the source of many chances. Instead, look for United to play off the wings often, especially with Christian Castillo on the left.
