David Beckham made his long-awaited MLS debut Thursday night, and Revs fans are hoping to see the British import in action when the Los Angeles Galaxy visits the Revolution and Gillette Stadium at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12. The game will be broadcast live on TV-38 and the WEEI Radio Network.

Beckham finally ripped off the training gear and came into an MLS game in the 72nd minute on Thursday in a Galaxy match against D.C. United. The D.C. fans were treated to one of Beckham’s fabled free kicks, but they were even more excited to see the United pull out the 1-0 win over a 10-man Galaxy squad.

Beckham’s late arrival generated buzz at RFK Stadium, but it could not help the Galaxy come back from the early deficit. Luciano Emilio scored for the third time in the last two games to give United a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute.

In anticipation of Beckham and the Galaxy’s arrival to Foxborough, Gillette Stadium’s soccer capacity for the game was increased to 32,000. Seats were made available for the entire lower bowl of the stadium and the East Fidelity Clubhouse. On Thursday, Aug. 2, the Revolution announced that the Galaxy match had been sold out and no tickets remain for Sunday’s match.

New England (9-4-6, 33 pts.) remains atop the Eastern Conference, despite a disappointing loss to D.C. United on Sunday, Aug. 5. D.C. has closed to within three points of the Revs after trailing New England by nine points one week ago. The Revs are looking to bounce back from that defeat and regain the momentum that helped the club earn a five-game unbeaten streak before the United match.

The Revolution fell behind early, when Matt Reis failed to hold onto a Clyde Simms shot in the 22nd minute. Joshua Gros was there to clean up the rebound to give United the 1-0 lead. Less than 10 minutes later, Luciano Emilio freed himself for a Guy-Roland Kpene through-ball, and unmarked, ripped a shot past Reis to give D.C. a two-goal cushion.

Steve Nicol inserted Adam Cristman into the lineup, in place of Andy Dorman, midway through the second half, giving the Revs three forwards in the second half. The adjustment led to more close calls, but no goals for New England.

All hopes for a miracle second-half comeback were erased when Emilio beat the defense again off a quick restart in the 75th minute. He charged at Reis, with no defenders between him and the Revs’ goalie, and slipped the shot by for the 3-0 advantage.

Not only did the loss snap a five-game unbeaten streak, it also gave New England its first loss this season on the FieldTurf Monofilament System at Gillette Stadium. The Revs now hold a 4-1-2 record on the turf, and a 4-2-4 record overall at home.
