Two rusty sides face up to each other in a bid to kick-start their respective campaigns as the Bangalore Royal Challengers take on the Kings XI Punjab in their first home game. Both teams come on the back of a loss and looked decidedly ordinary, especially in the batting department. Though the predicament appears similar, Bangalore's problems stem from lack of form while Punjab has injuries to blame for their loss. Both sides though boast plenty of world class talent, and the will to succeed would play a major role in deciding the winner at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Tuesday.

Royal Challengers Bangalore:
partnership.jpgThe much-celebrated Challengers batting came a cropper against the Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Sunday with Jacques Kallis' unbeaten 65 being the only saving grace. Ray Jennings' youth brigade disappointed the most, with the ploy to open with Sreevats Goswami backfiring. While the pint-sized Goswami found the bouncers hurled at him tough to negotiate, both Manish Pandey and Virat Kohli fell to poor shots. Eoin Morgan was also guilty of a rash shot, in his debut game though with more time under his belt he should become an exciting prospect.
Praveen Kumar was the pick of the bowlers, though the rest of the bowling around him was pretty ordinary with both Anil Kumble and Dale Steyn failing to make any significant impact. Though he won't go for wholesale changes, Kumble might look at pushing Rahul Dravid up the order to give the batting a more solid look. Cameron White, who missed the first game, might get a look-in at the expense of Roelof van der Merwe in order to strengthen the batting further. Goswami's failure would push him down the order but still keep him in the side, as it would be tough to accommodate Mark Boucher in the four foreign-slots available.
In whichever way they tweak the side, the Challengers need to make sure that their batting fires in order to give that much needed cushion to a bowling attack not ideally suited for a 20 over game.
Kings XI Punjab:
The Kings XI took on Delhi in the first game and though they could only muster 142, they did a pretty good job trying to defend the low-total. Sreesanth was brilliant with his out-swingers, and with Piyush Chawla and Irfan Pathan backing him well the bowling looks decent to carry on till the time a fit Brett Lee returns to the squad.
The problems though lie in the batting department, where the Lankan duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene would need to shoulder most of the burden while hoping that Yuvraj Singh returns to prime-form soon enough. Ravi Bopara striking form is one bright spot and though the team has a balanced look about it, Sangakkara would need to inspire an otherwise dull-looking outfit if the Kings XI are to hit the right notes this season.
Past Meetings:
Punjab holds a dominant 3-1 head to head record over Bangalore. The Mohali outfit scored comprehensive 6 & 9 wicket victories over Bangalore in the 2008 season and started off with another 7 wicket win (read more) in their first meeting at Durban before Bangalore came back to score their maiden triumph over Punjab at the same ground by 8 runs (read more). Anil Kumble would like to set the record straight at the Chinnaswamy and get some much-needed momentum going at the start of the tournament.
