Cold SKin Spanish Movie Review

Best-selling Spanish novel "Cold Skin" has taken its first step toward the bigscreen with KanZaman tying down movie adaptation rights to the Antarctic Island sci-fi action thriller.
With offices in Madrid, Monaco and Paris, KanZaman's production credits include Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" and Milos Forman's "Goya's Ghosts."
KanZaman has also attached Katia Lund, co-director of Fernando Meirelles' "City of God," to direct "The Stones of David," an $11 million Israel-Palestine contempo motherhood drama.
Written by the Barcelona-based Albert Sanchez Pinol, "Skin" was targeted by KanZaman partners Denise O'Dell and Mark Albela for 15 months.
The duo finally obtained rights on the cusp of Cannes from Spanish producer Pepe Magan who had optioned and finally bought the property this year.
Filmax and Focus Europe are believed to have also pursued the novel.
"Skin" has been translated into 29 languages.
First production step will be to attach a director and screenwriter, Albela said.
Budget will be north of $25 million, given extensive f/x and the need for higher-profile stars, he added.
KanZaman aims to shoot in Iceland, and set up "Skin" as a European production.
On "Stones of David," Lund has traveled to Spain to work on the film's screenplay with screenwriter Azucena Rodriguez.
KanZaman has also teamed with Morgan Freeman's production label Revelations Entertainment and Steve and Cliff Lanning's London-based TriSquare Film Prods. to produce "Moses Taite's War."
The adventure film toplines Freeman as a Kansas rancher in 1870 who journeys to India to import Brahman bulls.
evelations' Lori McCreary will join KanZaman to seek Indian co-production for the project at Cannes.

Whoa, so does this mean David Slade’s “Cold Skin” might end up getting made and finished before the director’s outing as a “Twilight” director? Nope, even though we’re already getting a teaser poster for Slade’s “Cold Skin”, a psychological horror film scheduled to shoot sometime in March 2010, which would put it about the time Slade wraps the third “Twilight” movie. The teaser poster of course doesn’t reveal much, though it, along with the description below, do seem to indicate Slade might be staying faithful to the original novel’s more sexual elements.

Based on the best-selling Spanish novel by Albert Sánchez Piñol, COLD SKIN is set on an Antarctic island, where a young man is stationed to log wind conditions. He discovers that the place is the habitat of nocturnal, amphibious humanoids, and encounters an older man there named Gruner, who has tamed one and made it his sex slave. The protagonist comes to care for the female creature, leading to conflict with both Gruner and her kin.

“Cold Skin” is based on the Spanish novel by Albert Sánchez Piñol, and is being adapted by Jesús Olmo (“28 Weeks Later”). The description and teaser poster definitely sells the film’s more sexual aspects. Namely that the male lead indulges in a little, well, inter-species hedonism during his stay on said island.

Yup, it’s that type of movie. So basically Slade will be going from two vastly different movies in the same year. It’s gonna be fascinating to see how he manages that.

On the edge of the Antartic Circle, in the years after World War I, a steam ship approaches a desolate island far from all shipping lanes. On board is a young man, on his way to assume the lonely post of weather observer, to live in solitude for a year at the end of the world. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. The rest is forest, a deserted cabin, rocks, silence, and the surrounding sea. And then the night begins to fall..
Some interesting news from a regular tipster who is telling us that Alex and David Pastor have come on to re-write Cold Skin> for Kanazman. The Pastor brothers wrote and directed Carriers for Paramount Vantage, so we're not exactly sure what the fate of David Slade is, but all signs point to him being off the project. "On the edge of the Antarctic Circle, a steamship approaches a desolate island. On board is a young man, poised to take the post of weather observer, to live in solitude at the end of the earth. But on shore he finds no trace of the man whom he has been sent to replace, just a deranged castaway who has witnessed a horror he refuses to name. For the next twelve months his entire world will consist of a deserted cabin, trees, rocks, silence and the surrounding sea. Then night begins to fall »

After he finishes shooting Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight series, director David Slade will travel back to the snowy wilderness he grew familiar with on 30 Days of Night when he begins filming Cold Skin. Based on a Spanish novel of the same name, the story revolves around a man who's sent to Anatarctica to record the weather for a year, only to discover that nocturnal monsters crawl out of the sea each night to attack. 28 Weeks Later co-writer Jesus Olmo has penned the script for the $25 million production, and shooting will begin in March 2010.
