History

The competition has its roots in the Fairs Cup which was replaced in 1971 by the UEFA Cup. The third European competition – the Cup-Winners Cup – was merged with the UEFA Cup a decade ago with the UEFA Cup itself seeing a group stage added for the first time in 2005/6.

Participants

The new competition will see some major players for its first outing. England’s participants include Everton and Aston Villa who are previous European Cup winners, Villarreal and Valencia provide some of the Spanish interest whilst Lazio and Roma form an interesting local double act from Italy. Werder Bremen will once again compete alongside fellow German side Hertha Berlin and with former winners from Russia Zenit St Petersburg, Ajax, Benfica, Dinamo and Steaua Bucharest, SV Hamburg and PSV Eindhoven all in the mix not to mention a host of other less glamorous clubs yet with European experience, the competition should have well and truly heated up long before the introduction of the Champions League clubs.

The new and updated format of the UEFA Europa League should raise the interest of every football fan irrespective of whether or not their club is involved. With the UEFA Champions League format having had such a positive influence in the continued and growing success of that competition, the revised structure of Europe’s second competition should make very exciting watching in the coming months.
