BAANA KAATHADI Tamil MOVIE REVIEWS
It may not be a popular sport as it is in Gujarat, but flying kites is what every boy -- and some girls -- does in Tamil Nadu. A coming of age ritual that grown men recall with fondness, after cricket. Which is why debutant director’s ‘Baana (big) Kaathadi’ triggers a fair amount of interest in you.
It is also a film in which another star son takes a bow in front of the camera, and acting comes naturally to Atharvaa, son of yesteryear hero Murali. As Ramesh, a Plus II student from the tenements of Royapuram, he is an average kid with his share of troubles in life. Studies, which are a bore, a mother who is all sound but very little fury, and a group of friends who share his passion for kite flying form his immediate surroundings. A Rajnikanth kite pops up often, as though the sport needed a superstar to keep it flying high.
However, in his rush to grab hold of a falling kite, Atharvaa literally bumps into Priya (Samantha) a student of fashion technology, and in the process she loses her pen drive, in which her college project is stored. With a three-day grace period to find the pen drive, she goes in search of Ramesh. As you guessed, the stage is set for a friendship between a rich girl and a poor boy. As usual it is friends who nudge him towards love. Nothing new in the treatment barring some dialogues which make you laugh out loud. A condom plays villain in the fledgling relationship, and the story travels along familiar lines.
What is far more interesting, and potentially a more interesting story is the sub plot of Ravi, the local goonda. With his eyes-to-die-for and underplayed violence, Prasanna easily steals the show, and when Atharvaa blunders into his path, it is a moment of agony for Ravi, who has a soft corner for the hero and his friends. Just when you expect a nice climax where everything gels perfectly, Badri opts for a different ending, which comes through as contrived. Although the romance is nothing great--and the director has spent 90 minutes to the interval on it, the second half is easily more engaging.
Both Atharvaa and Samantha do a fairly good job, while Mounika and Prasanna prove that acting is actually a job that can be done well if you have the mettle. Yuvan’s music is par for the course, but editing is rather jerky. Clearly the screenplay hasn’t played out all that smoothly. The kite could have soared, but falters and dips too often.
