Plot:
Barry Munday wakes up after being attacked to realize that he's missing his family jewels. To make matters worse, he learns he's facing a paternity lawsuit filed by a woman he can't remember having sex with.
Patrick Wilson is a Tony-nominated actor whose work in movies has ranged from passionate love scenes with Kate Winslet in the Oscar-nominated Little Children to pursuing fugitive GI’s in the summer action film The A-Team. But the role that will be forever branded on the insides of my eyelids is the sexual predator who is mentally — if not physically — castrated for his sins by Ellen Page in Hard Candy. I don’t know a man who didn’t squirm in his seat during those protracted torture scenes or acquire a sympathetic limp as he exited the theater. In Wilson’s upcoming comedy, Barry Munday, Wilson plays a suburban Casanova whose brazen horndoggery costs him something very dear to him. You guessed it — his testicles. Watch the trailer a
Some actors would steer clear of such emasculating roles, but Wilson, who’s also slated to appear in the upcoming romantic comedies Morning Glory and The Switch, must be very secure. (He was in the Broadway version of The Full Monty, after all.) Still, what are the odds of playing two different characters in two different movies who suffer such a similar unfortunate fate? Give Wilson credit: He’s got cojones Movie Review :
It’s hard to know exactly how to feel about “Barry Munday,” or “BARRY MUNDAY,” as the filmmakers apparently want it written. True, deep down inside the comedy — about a man slouching through life until he learns he’s about to become a father — there is a kind and heartfelt story of redemption and growing up. But in the case of “MUNDAY” it comes couched in easy, cliché humor, too many tit-and-balls jokes and a kind of deus ex machina (or perhaps deus ex instrument) that propels the story into motion but has nothing whatsoever to do with the rest of the film.
Barry, our titular hero, is kind of a skeevy loser. He’s a slacker at his job, an ogler at all times, and spends his evenings enjoying nacho night at the local TGIF with his air-guitar-playing buddy and sleeping with whoever’s left at last call. He might have good intentions or basically be a decent guy, but it’s hard to tell — until the accident. He’s attacked in a movie theater by an angry (and perhaps psychotic) father wielding a trumpet (an instrument chosen in an extended, non-relevant opening credit sequence). Barry retains no memory of the incident, and the audience never gets any more information about the attack or why the entire opening sequence of the film spent its time in a musical instrument store. Instead, Barry wakes up in a hospital sans testicles.
The movie actually gets started around here, even though it follows a predictable sequence. Having realized he’s the end of his genetic line, Barry jumps in with both feet when a one-night stand he also doesn’t remember claims he impregnated her. Let the redemption begin — suddenly, slowly, Barry does his best to become a genuine human being. And it isn’t easy, as the mother-to-be, Ginger, is hateful, resentful and uglified to a “T.” So follow the dots: Meet the parents (Cybill Shepherd and Malcolm McDowell, who dress alike — cue easy telegraphed laugh), meet the sexy sister (Chloë Sevigny), watch as everyone gets to know one another and form a FAMILY. Barry’s evolution is gradual and touching, but he’s upstaged by Ginger (Judy Greer), who does remember their night together — and whose revelation as to why she slept with Barry is genuinely heartbreaking.
Such are the slight bright moments in an otherwise by-the-book comedy. When the sets — which are full of visual sight gags, like Barry’s mom’s wall-sized posters of her son — are the most subtly humorous parts of a film, you know you’re in for a slog. Sadly, it’s a film that just doesn’t have any real cojones.
