Piranha 3D (2010) REVIEW
It was deemed to hot to screen at this year's Comic-Con so it had to be moved off-site late at night. We're talking about Piranha 3D, the most violent, hilarious, over-the-top and downright entertaining as hell horror film showcased at this year's show.
The Weinstein Co. screened a little over 10 minutes of unfinished footage from the forthcoming 3D remake of Roger Corman's 1978 cult classic. Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) directed it and was also on-hand for a Q&A session following the footage presentation.
Beware of SPOILERS from here on, as the fate of some of the cast members will be revealed. The footage began with two divers swimming deep into an underwater cavern. It's a massive cave and one of the divers, Sam, remarks about the abundance of fish eggs throughout it. We see the hideous silhouette of a baby piranha inside one of the eggs as he swims past the camera. Sam analyzes a weird strand of orange-colored eggs, but suddenly flinches. His hand's been bitten while touching them. After being teased over his headset by his fellow diver, Sam turns around and his flashlight reveals a school of fang-bearing piranha massing behind him. You can imagine what happens next.
Cut to Lake Victoria on a beautiful sunny day where a raunchy spring break party full of teens and twenty-somethings is raging. Actor-director Eli Roth (Hostel) plays the sleazy emcee of a wet t-shirt contest, or as he refers to it while hosing down the busts of the contestants, "The Hills." The contest is being held on a floating stage not too far from shore as a slew of young partygoers booze it up as they swim around the stage.
