serving Republican in Senate history. Both were on a small airplane that crashed in a remote part of southwestern Alaska.
9 People were on the plane and there are 4 survivors, two had serious injuries and two had minor injuries. It is unclear if Stevens or O’Keefe are among the survivors.
A private medical team was dropped near the crash site by commercial helicopter. Coast Guard Petty Officer David Mosley said the agency has a plane flying over the crash scene, scouting it to make sure it’s safe for helicopters to come into the area with pararescuers.
The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to Alaska to investigate the crash. Senior air safety investigator Clint Johnson, from the NTSB’s Anchorage regional office, will be the investigator in charge, and the entire team is expected in Dillingham by midday.
Alaska National Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes said the Guard was called to the area about 20 miles north of Dillingham at about 7 p.m. Monday after a passing aircraft saw the wreckage.
