Step Up 3D Movie Review:
So when did the series become so Disney-fied? Yes, Touchstone is the co-producer, but the smouldering teen sexuality of the first movie has been dumped for a ”tweeny” kind of demographic. The supporting cast of dancers are younger, perkier and more G-rated, as if the movie is going after the Hannah Montana/High School Musical audience.
That’s hardly what street dance is about, but then this movie isn’t reflecting that culture so much as appropriating and selling it to a wider (and whiter) audience.
The film has plenty of black, brown and Asian faces – just none that is a lead character. The other crews they compete against are all racially defined, and threatening. Luke’s crew is a rainbow coalition of sweeties. Decoded, this is the usual Hollywood response to black youth culture: strip and copy, uproot and sanitise. It’s been happening since jazz was a boy but that still doesn’t make it right.
So for race politics nil, even if dance 10. It is always good to see fit young things pushing their bodies to the limit, expressing beauty and hope in unison. Adam Sevani is an extraordinary talent, who deserves the attention. I look forward to seeing him in a sturdier vehicle
