Valentine's Day Hollywood Film News: FROM HOLLYWOOD CRUSH: It's not even 2010 yet, but already we're counting down the days until "Valentine's Day" hits theaters. Ensemble romantic comedies tend to be some of the better rom-coms that are put out nowadays (look at this year's "He's Just Not That Into You" or our personal Christmas favorite, 2001's "Love Actually"), and even though we have some reservations on how this particular star-fest will hold up, it's still something we can't wait to see.
The second trailer (see it after the jump!) hit theaters over the weekend, and it's definitely showing off its aspect that is getting all the buzz: its massive cast. We see in the trailer how much of the film will be spent interweaving its characters with one another, such as can be seen with Ashton Kutcher in particular and at the Anti-Valentine's Day party lead by Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel.

Brett Hanson (William Hurt) dealing with a painful past, crosses paths with Martine (Kristen Stewart), a troubled teenager ,and her new ‘ride’ Gordy (Eddie Redmayne). The trio head out together, each motivated by his/her own reasons: Brett must decide whether he wants to return to the uncertainty of his life and his ex-wife May (Maria Bello) for whom he longs, Martine yearns to escape her family and Gordy hopes to get close to her.
The Yellow Handkerchief Hollywood Movie Review : The Yellow Handkerchief follows a 15-year-old Louisiana girl, a ex-con, and an awkward annoying young eccentric kid with a blue convertible go on a road trip to, well, nowhere. Just like the film. The whole story is pointless and contrived. How three perfect strangers ended up in a car together is fully explained but not the least bit believable. I feel like the three characters were in a car together because the screenwriter wanted them to be in a car together. The backstories for both of the younger characters are mentioned, but never even followed-up upon. I’m still not sure why Kristen Stewart has quickly become the new indie IT Girl (following Evan Rachel Wood, and Jena Malone before her). Stewart’s over-reactionary mannerisms look almost as odd as her unnaturally brown died hair. Eddie Redmayne’s eccentric act had me wondering if his character was mentally challenged, although nothing in the story seemed to suggest such.
I’m guessing that the point of the film is for the audience to wonder how the character played by William Hurt, became an ex-con. They reveal this story through a series of LOST-inspired flashbacks intercut throughout. Only, the flashbacks don’t offer much to keep your attention. The Yellow Handkerchief Movie Gallery

I Love You Phillip Morris English Film Synopsis : Watch online movie Story : When a local Texas policeman, Steve Russell (Jim Carrey), turns to cons and fraud to allow him to change his lifestyle (in more ways than one), his subsequent stay in the state penitentiary results in his meeting the love of his life, a sensitive fellow inmate named Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). What ensues can only be described as a relentless quest as Russell attempts escape after escape and executes con after con, all in the name of love.
This is the world of the preposterous: it plays like a farce but is vastly entertaining because it turns all that we take for granted about life on its head. As a primer on the irresistible power of a man who is either insane or in love (is there a difference?), "I Love You Phillip Morris" surely serves to remind us of the resilience of the human spirit. Film News : Comedy directing duo John Requa and Glenn Ficarra have been tied to the upcoming Steve Carell romantic comedy. Warner Brothers has tapped the two who are fresh off the small market comedy I Love You Phillip Morris set to be released in March. I Love You Phillip Morris Hollywood Movie Review : A packed screening at the Sunset 5 in Hollywood. The audience rewarded it with a heartfelt applause and me among them. A stunning surprise. The film starts by telling us the story is true, really, really true and that adds to the already enormous surprise.
A con man in the vein of Leonardo Di Caprio in "Catch Me As You Can" that deep down is overwhelmingly honest. After years of being a wonderful father and husband he confesses to his wife that he's gay. He remains friends and close to his family. Ends up in jail and meets the love of his life. The love story between Jim Carrey and the astonishing Ewan McGregor is a first for the screen. Miles away from the wonderful Brokeback Mountain because here their love is public without borders. I totally believe in the flame that both of them ignite looking into each other's eyes. It is so intimate and real that I realized I had never seen it quite like this on the screen before. The fact that this film couldn't get a distribution is beyond me. I'm certain it's going to be one of the hits of 2009 and Jim Carrey as well as Ewan McGregor will get Oscar nominations. I saw the film on the 8th, 4 days ago and I've been craving to see it again ever since. Look at McGregor's face when he realizes this man really loves him. The tenderness is nothing short of breathtaking. As if all of the above wasn't enough "I Love You Phillip Morris" is hysterically funny. Highly and warmly recommended

The Cabin in the Woods English Film News : MGM has announced this afternoon that the Joss Whedon scripted high-concept horror/slasher "THE CABIN IN THE WOODS" has been bumped from it's planned February 2010 date and will now arrive in theaters on January 14, 2011. Another surprise is that they'll be turning the Drew Goddard ("CLOVERFIELD") directed project 3-D for its release. The Cabin story line provides a new twist on a classic scenario -- in this case the young-people-stranded-in-the-woods horror trope.
The Cabin in the Woods hollywood movie Reviews : MGM Studios has delayed the theatrical release of "The Cabin in the Woods" for nearly a year. Shock Till You Drop (STYD) reported that the horror movie which was originally slated for release in cinemas across the U.S. on February 5, 2010, has been pushed to a new date in 2011 for a 3-D treatment. "Cabin" will make its debut over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day weekend, on January 14 to be exact. It means that the movie directed by "Cloverfield" screenwriter Drew Goddard will open in theaters a week before the fourth "Underworld" movie, "Underworld 4", is scheduled to come out. As for the reason behind the move, MGM reps explained, as reported by STYD, that the early response to the film has been phenomenal and prompted the studio to give it a 3-D treatment. MGM is expected to spend six months or so converting "Cabin" to 3-D. "The Cabin in the Woods" will offer a twisted and unusual take on the familiar "cabin in the woods" formula. "Burn After Reading" actor Richard Jenkins, "Bottle Shock" actor Bradley Whitford, and "Thor" leading man Chris Hemsworth are among the cast ensemble.

Red Riding: 1983 English Film Synopsis : With the kidnapping of another young girl, Detective Maurice Jobson notices a number of powerful similarities to the abduction cases he had investigated back in the '70s - and for which a man was convicted and sentenced. Meanwhile, a reluctant local solicitor, John Piggott, decides to take up the condemned man¿s cause.
The Red Riding Trilogy draws to a close in this installment that finds Detective Chief Superintendent Maurice Jobson (David Morrissey) realizing that the Yorkshire Ripper may still be at large, despite the fact that someone has already been convicted of the heinous crimes. When a young girl is abducted in an incident that bears a chilling resemblance to the crimes of the Yorkshire Ripper, Chief Superintendent Jobson is forced to consider the possibility that he helped to put the wrong man behind bars. Meanwhile, local solicitor John Piggott (Mark Addy) stumbles onto evidence of a massive cover up, and wages a one-man mission to uncover the truth. Adapted from British author David Pease's bestselling series of crime novels centering on the mystery of the Yorkshire Ripper.
Red Riding: 1983 Hollywood Movie Reviews : Again, I must begin this review (and I apologise) by directing you to my reviews for the first two instalments in this trilogy. Just so that you know how truly amazed/mesmerised/impressed I was by this production. It's now 1983 and we have a number of story strands coming together and, pay attention and you shouldn't get too confused, a number of flashbacks tying everything together and revealing more than we ever realised from the first outing (the middle, 1980, section isn't really as vital although it's still a connecting vein in the overall story arch).
The police corruption continues, suspects are pulled in on a whim and shown the "force" in police force, while a few good souls (including a lawyer who feels in way over his head but realises that something must be done, brilliantly played by Mark Addy) try to actually ensure that justice is done and that some innocence is saved. What can I say that I haven't already said about the "1974" and "1980" instalments of this peerless trilogy? This has consistently impressed me beyond belief from the very start to the last minute. Mark Addy reminds us that he really can be a great actor and deserves some more, better roles like this one. David Morrisey, ever-present throughout the trilogy, takes centre-stage here and certainly gives one of his best ever performances (certainly from the little I have seen of him). Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, has fumbled so much as one line throughout this entire trilogy and all involved should be mightily proud of such an achievement.

Despite government promises to maintain order, the state of the district has deteriorated, and a group of corrupt cops and elected officials are conspiring to cause civil unrest in D13, looking for an excuse to raze the area and cash in on its redevelopment. Now Damian and Leito must join forces again, and use their mastery of martial arts and their unique physical skills to bring peace to the neighborhood by any means necessary... before a proposed nuclear air-strike wipes it off the map.
District 13: Ultimatum Hollywood Movie Reviews : Well, let me get it out of the way -- "Ultimatum" is not as fun or exciting as the first film. Fans looking for more of the amazing David Belle and the stunts of parkour will find these elements lacking in the sequel. B-13 had a simple plot and explosive action sequences that still hold up well today. New director this time around and the crisp compositions and editing of the original are replaced with more uses of the hand-held cam, to less successful results.
If you liked the opening camera-work in B13 -- you get a lot more of it here as the camera swooshes around the blocks of District 13 introducing the major players in the film. Fortunatly, the chemistry of Belle and Raffaelli is still strong, but they just don't have enough to do together in this plot. Speaking of plot, I would dare say that this sequel has too much plot and side characters. Belle seems like a supporting player in his own film. Now to be fair, there are a couple of good sequences that spark the original vibe of B-13, but sadly, they are few and far between. I had high hopes going into this one, but was let down overall. Let's hope that for the third film (come on, there has to be one) that both Belle and Raffaelli are given the room to really top and go beyond what we've seen them do before.

Red Riding: 1980 English Film Synopsis : The police and the public still baffled that the "Ripper" remains at large and may have inspired a copycat killer. A veteran police officer, Peter Hunter, is called in from Manchester to take over the investigation, but his new theories about the case only incite growing opposition to his involvement. The Red Riding Trilogy continues in this sequel that picks up six years after the events of the first film. The Yorkshire Ripper is continuing to prey on the young women of a dead-end town, and the local police have proven completely ineffective in solving the crimes.
When Manchester Detective Peter Hunter (Paddy Considine) arrives in Yorkshire to investigate, he discovers a number of inconsistencies in the official report, and begins to suspect foul play. Unfortunately for both Detective Hunter and the growing list of victims, the local police seem unusually tight lipped about the case. Perhaps their refusal to aid Detective Hunter in his investigation has something to do with his previous visit to Yorkshire in 1974, when rubbed the local authorities the wring way while investigating a shooting. As Detective Hunter delves deeper into the case, it becomes increasingly obvious that incompetence isn't to likely blame for the lack of progress made by Yorkshire police. Photos (see all 10 )
Red Riding: 1980 Hollywood Movie Reviews : Detective Peter Hunter (Paddy Constantine) is assigned to head a Covert investigation into the West Yorkshire Police's handling on the Yorkshire Ripper case, authorized by the Home Secretary. He handpicks two of the best associates he knows, including one he was once romantically linked with, and the investigation starts. A prostitute, seemingly another Ripper victim, puts a dramatic turn on things when Hunter learns of her history with the head of the police force years ago and this leads to a dramatic twist involving corruption, betrayal and murder. The Yorkshire Police's handling of the Ripper enquiry was notoriously criticized at the time it was going on, and provides an interesting, if questionable, backdrop for this superior second part of the Red Riding trilogy.
The only part of the series to deviate from the original story into something completely different, it's a dour and humourless affair but at least there is a clear and intelligent story to follow here, that doesn't get too lost in deep, dark monologues and moody atmosphere.
In the lead role, Constantine fits the material with a straight laced and serious demeaneur that is matched by the rest of the supporting cast. Hopefully, the relatives of the Ripper's victims didn't find it too disrespectful but this is quite possibly the most well made and gripping part of the story.

Bass Ackwards English Film Plot: Bass Ackwards is a captivating and consummately human film that reminds us that whatever we think the road is about; the trip is probably about something else. Alternating between scripted action, improvisation, and the unpredictable spontaneity of vérité encounters, the film is the semi-autobiographical story of Linas Phillips, who stars as well as directs. Born of the imagination of Linas and his easy collaboration with old friends, costars, and co-conspirators Davie-Blue, Jim Fletcher, Paul Lazar, and Sean Porter, the film effortlessly and organically crosses the line between reality and fiction, incorporating the people and characters that Linas meets on an unscripted and adventurous ride across America. Bass Ackwards Hollywood Movie Reviews : One of the brand new additions to the Sundance Film Festival this year that a lot of people will be keeping an eye on is their NEXT category, which features 8 films that were made for either very little money or no money at all. I dig the idea behind the category, and the fact that Sundance is trying to once again return to celebrating the true spirit of independent film, and I look forward to seeing what these scrappy little show dogs bring to the table.
One such film is called Bass Ackwards, and today Cinematical has its exclusive poster premiere. The film follows a dude whose life sorta falls apart to the point where he rents a van and decides to drive across country to go move back in with his parents. It's on this road trip, though, that he meets some people who help him find a reason to love life again. One of the cool things about Bass Ackwards is that they struck a very unique deal to make the film available via multiple platforms (digital, VOD, DVD) the day after the festival ends, on February 1st. So make sure you keep an eye out for it.
In the meantime, you can read more about Bass Ackwards in our Sundance Primer on the film, and you can check out the full poster by clicking the image below.
