Gillian Armstrong's Death Defying Acts (The Weinstein Co.) is a minor but satisfying entry in the "what if" historical-fantasy genre spoofed in that old SNL skit, "What if George Washington had a robot friend?" Such movies wedge imagined characters and events into the lives of historic figures. What if Sigmund Freud treated Sherlock Holmes for cocaine addiction? What if H.G. Wells really did build a time machine and Jack the Ripper got into it and traveled to the present day? I'll admit to a total weakness for this particular brand of baloney. All a "what if" movie needs to win me over are some lush costumes and production design, a smart casting choice or two, and a really ridiculous basic idea. Death Defying Acts obliges on all fronts.
Berg, who won the very first Best Actress Emmy Award, turned The Goldbergs into a cottage industry that spawned a movie, jigsaw puzzles, a comic strip and a cookbook. But by the mid ’50s the series was running on fumes on NBC, where it was cancelled and replaced by I Love Lucy. The show’s waning seasons saw the family living comfortably in the suburbs, assimilation complete. And maybe after World War II, that’s what TV audiences wanted to see. But they didn’t want to see it from the Goldbergs, a very Jewish family with very Yiddish accents dealing with very real problems. Gertrude was a progressive voice during a non-progressive time. She was a feminist years removed from suffrage, but years away from Women’s Lib. Yet Kempner’s doc about her is not a feminist tract. It’s an appreciation of an underappreciated life and career. And it makes the domestic silliness of I Love Lucy seem downright insulting to women. Indeed, the next time you watch sitcoms like Maude or Roseanne, imagine there’s an apron-clad baleboste smiling from above and voicing her approval with, as she’d say, “all the letters of the alphabet

Blood: The Last Vampire" brings to life an English language live-action feature movie of the original Japanese anime feature film from a producer of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Hero." Gianna ("My Sassy Girl," "Daisy") stars in the film as Saya, a 400-year-old demon-hunting vampire slayer working undercover in Japan for a secret organization, on a mission in the Vietnam War era. The cast also includes Koyuki ("The Last Samurai," "Always: Sunset on Third Street"), Michael Byrne ("Beyond the Sea," "Gangs of New York"), Colin Salmon ("Resident Evil," "Punisher: War Zone," "Clubbed"), and Allison Miller (“Kings”). The film features stunt choreographed by Cory Yuen ("Transporter 3," "Red Cliff"), is produced by Bill Kong and Abel Nahmias, with screenplay by Chris Chow.

On the surface, Saya is a stunning 16-year-old, but that youthful exterior hides the tormented soul of a 400-year-old "halfling." Born to a human father and a vampire mother, she has for centuries been a loner obsessed with using her samurai skills to rid the world of vampires, all the while knowing that she herself can survive only on blood like those she hunts. When she is sent onto an American military base in Tokyo by the clandestine organization she works for, Saya immediately senses that this may be her opportunity to finally destroy Onigen, the evil patriarch of all vampires. Using her superhman strength and her sword, she begins to rid the base of its evil infestation in a series of spectacular and elaborate showdowns. However, it is not until she forms her first human friendship in centuries with the young daughter of the base's general that Saya learns of her greatest power over Onigen may well be her ability for human connection...

Although the legions of actors and writers dreaming of their big score won't have much sympathy for Nia Vardalos, her predicament can't be easy. When your very first movie (that would be "My Big Fat Greek Wedding") became perhaps the biggest sleeper hit in history, with worldwide grosses topping $360 million, what can you possibly do for an encore?

Vardalos realizes she never will top that movie's success, as she's acknowledged with refreshing candor in interviews. Her subsequent ventures, including "Connie and Carla," the TV version of "Greek Wedding" and this summer's boxoffice disappointment "My Life in Ruins," only proved the obvious truism that blockbusters are notoriously difficult to duplicate.

"I Hate Valentine's Day," which had its world premiere at the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival and will open next week in theaters, will not mark a sudden change in Vardalos' fortunes. This time she not only stars and wrote the screenplay but also makes her directorial debut. She will not be a threat to Woody Allen anytime soon, but some of her fans will find this romantic comedy endearing. Vardalos reteams with "Greek Wedding" co-star John Corbett, and they demonstrate that their chemistry in that earlier movie was no fluke.

As the title hints, Vardalos set out to undermine the commercialization of romance that makes so many people feel inadequate. Her character, Genevieve, runs a flower shop in Brooklyn, and while she makes her living catering to people's romantic fantasies, she is not buying the mythology. In her personal relationships, Genevieve has a "five-date" rule, which means she breaks off every budding romance after five dates, before the fun has gone out of the fling and anyone gets hurt. Of course, her rule is tested when she meets Greg (Corbett), a disenchanted lawyer who is opening a tapas bar in the neighborhood. Greg has a rather melancholy history with women, so he's receptive to Genevieve's happy-go-lucky formula. Eventually, both have to break their self-destructive patterns before they can connect.

Life Is Hot in Cracktown" shows the gritty, hard realities of a neighborhood, as well as the struggling, proud people who try to survive them everyday.

Marybeth (Kerry Washington) is a pre-op transsexual working as a prostitute and living with her lover, Benny, a small time burglar. In spite of their lines of work, they live a somewhat normal life as a married couple. Marybeth works the streets in the hopes of saving enough money for her final sex change operation, so then she and Benny can be married.

Manny (Victor Rasuk) works two jobs: the late shift in an all night bodega surrounded by young junkies, drug dealers and prostitutes, and as a security guard in a Welfare hotel. At home his wife, Concetta (Shannyn Sossamon), takes care of his sick infant son and makes their grimy rundown apartment as much of a home as she can.

Willy, ten years old, lives in the Welfare hotel with his sister, mother (Illeana Douglas) and her violent boyfriend. Willy begs on the street so he and Susie can buy some fast food to eat.
