Melur, with her melodious voice, singing whilst playing the piano is one of the seven finalists of the Talentime competition of her school organised by Cikgu Adibah. It all started after Mahesh, amongst the students assigned to get the finalists to school for practice, delivered the notice of successful audition to Melur's house.

His handsome looks attracted the girl. Early on of their relationship, tragedy struck Mahesh's family when his uncle Ganesh who had been the care-taker of the family since the loss of Mahesh's father, was stabbed to death on his wedding day. Melur thinking that Mahesh's silence was due to his grief over the tragedy became furious when she was continuously ignored. She regretted it however after Hafez revealed Mahesh's situation.

That changed Melur's perception of Mahesh. Likewise Mahesh, who grew comfortable with the presence of the girl who often quotes beautiful poetry. Mahesh, realizing that the relationship will be opposed, kept it hidden from his mother, still grieving over the death of Ganesh. Alas, the secret was exposed and Mahesh was assaulted before Melur's very eyes. Just a day before the competition, is Melur resilient enough to sing the poetic lyrics of her song when her heart is tormented by the thoughts of Mahesh? What about Mahesh who has found his first love? On Talentime night, everything unfolds.

Talentime Movie Review

It's a simple equation. One pair of supporting parents, the mother beautiful and slim and the father ruggedly handsome and chubby. Add in a very cool maid. Plus a daughter or two who would inevitably fall in love with a guy from another race. Oh, and make them all speak quite good English. Then you’d have a Yasmin Ahmad movie.

Admittedly, I did not really know of her until after Sepet took off. Even then, I did not really bother getting caught up with the hype. But I took a chance going to see Gubra with some friends and I fell in love with her work.

Gubra was real. Like the hospital scene where you saw the buttocks of one of the patients. It’s real. Just like the dialogue and the situations in the movie.

So I waited for her next movie. Mukhsin. Again. She blew me away with its raw honesty. Her movies are not totally complicated. The story’s simple and easy to grasp. But she crafted each and every frame beautifully that the movies are transformed into works of art.

After Mukhsin, came Muallaf, and I was salivating, waiting for its release but it was never released in Malaysia. Lucky foreign people…

Then I got wind of Talentime and obviously I have to watch it at any cost. And when an invite was issued to the radio, I jumped on the chance to go and cover the preview at Cineleisure.
And I got to meet Yasmin the genius herself before the movie was shown. I was practically buzzing coz somehow deep inside I knew the movie would be simple and realistic but deeply beautiful and touching.

From the beginning, it was quite the visual treat. It was funny in the most inappropriate places. It was serious as the issues were touched are often quite taboo or sensitive.

Talentime, while a trademark tearjerker of Yasmin Ahmad’s, fails to show how the chemistry between its two main leads develops. While it is clear that the two are deeply in love after some point in the film, as well as undergoing some protest by one of their parents, it is not revealed why the wealthy Melur who obviously has social connections would so suddenly fall for a boy she has just met, having shared perhaps only very little time together. The film, of course, is to be lauded for its realistic and humanistic portrayal of the multicultural interactions in Malaysia, as it extends dimension to characters otherwise stereotypically defined in Cerekarama films.

The actors playing Melur, Mahesh, and Hafiz give a grounded performance worthy of a title such as ‘Talentime’. While it is not known if the actors really do converse in sign language, their fluency in it is admirable. Once again the parents’ flirtatiousness towards each other is displayed. What is truly touching is not the romance of the two main fledglings but the almost innocent banter between Azean Irdawaty and Jit Murad, as Azean’s character lies dying, visited by Jit’s charismatic stranger.

Adibah Amin splendidly plays a "Wassup" spewing headteacher, who interestingly views the oft-touted "deklamasi sajak" routines as lame and "memang pedih pun," referring to a line from the sajak.

Review

NEW YORK -- A hit throughout Southeast Asia when it was released last year, "Ong Bak 2" is a throwback to the kung fu flicks of a previous generation. First-rate action scenes alternate with florid melodrama, and jaw-dropping stunts try to compensate for saccharine plot twists. An excellent vehicle for martial-arts champ Tony Jaa (the screen name for Panom Yeerum), "Ong Bak 2" will please action fans while drawing barely a glance from mainstream viewers.
The original "Ong Bak," which also starred Jaa, was a thriller set in present-day Bangkok and dealt with smuggling, poaching, drugs and slavery. While it hits on many of the same topics, "Ong Bak 2" takes place in the 15th century and is built around a political feud between decadent rulers and their opponents.

Jaa plays Tien, forced on the run as a child after his parents are murdered, and then raised in a rebel gang led by Chernung (Sorapong Chatree). Headquartered in a majestic jungle hideout, the Garuda Wing Cliff rebels operate much like Robin Hood's men, staging raids on local despots and liberating enslaved peasants. Tien works his way up to leader of the gang, then sets out on his own quest for vengeance.

It takes almost a half-hour for Jaa to appear on screen, and for large stretches his acting, including his fighting, feels a bit perfunctory. Kung fu aficionados will appreciate the sequences showing Tien's martial arts training, captured in loving detail.
The action is surrounded by impressive filmmaking. Jaa jumps across a herd of elephants, leads attacks on enormous castles and takes part in elaborate ethnic dances, supported all the while by strong production design, wonderful costumes and assured editing.

Like the original, "Ong Bak 2" leads up to a slam-bang finale in which Jaa takes on dozens of opponents in a fight to the finish. Here's where his skill and dedication come into focus. Even the most jaded viewer can't help but be astonished at Jaa's athleticism as he leaps, spins, flips and at one point takes a three-story fall

Synopsis:

GAMER is an action thriller set in a near future when gaming and entertainment have evolved into a terrifying new hybrid. Humans control other humans in mass-scale, multi-player online games: people play people...for keeps. "Slayers," a first-person shooter game allows millions to act out their most savage fantasies online in front of a global audience, using real prisoners as avatars with whom they fight to the death. Kable (300's Gerard Butler) is the superstar and cult hero of "Slayers." Kable is controlled by Simon who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week. Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, the modern day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game to free his family, regain his identity and to save mankind from Castle's ruthless technology.

Gamer Movie Review:

In our ever changing society, video games and their respective consoles have been upgrading themselves rapidly. Long gone are the days of the Sega 16-Bit consoles with bulky game cartridges and the Nintendo Gameboy and this has been fast replaced by the likes of the Wii, the third incarnation of the Playstation and even the PSP. On the computer, first shooter games like Doom have also evolved and the likes of Counterstrike and Left 4 Dead allows players to play with other players on other computers around the world. So, where does the movie Gamer fit in into all this? Gamer takes us many steps ahead when the game player can control a game character, who happens to be a living, breathing human being.

Intriguing premise? Certainly. Great movie? Certainly not. In the world of Gamer, a man by the name of Ken Castle has developed a technology that allows people to pay to control other people’s lives in a fantasy world and people can also be paid to become these characters and allow themselves to be controlled in the context of a game. As a result, his highly successful model, Society (something like The Sims) is a bonafide hit and Castle becomes even richer than Bill Gates. He soon comes up with a new game, Slayers and this one becomes an even bigger sensation. Allowing men on death row and rejects of society to sign up, Castle extracts these men from the prison system (with the Governement’s cooperation he says) and Slayers becomes everyone’s worse nightmare come true. It is a first-person shooter game where as mentioned earlier; the gamer controls the character, a real human being who has to fight to survive while being watched by people around the world.

The movie, made by the same contorted minds behind both Crank movies is unfortunately, not at their best here. The style is there (causing one too many headaches too) but the wit is lacking and the story, which has so much potential is blah. There’s a scene involving Vodka, human waste and the gas tank of a truck that is typical Nevedine/Taylor but they go as far as that. The bulk of the movie revolves around Kable (Gerard Butler), a character who is nearing his release from the game (this will happen if a character wins 30 battles) and his chance at redemption. Throw in a light dose of how he was not meant to be there in the first place and that’s Gamer for you. A lot of touch and go and a not a whole lot of meaning.

Gerard Butler is at the forefront of this movie and after 300, it’s no surprise that he is able to handle a movie of this kind with its action and what not but at the same time, it is also nothing too impressive. Also, he is surrounded by a good cast of people in the likes of Alison Lohman, John Leguizamo, Ludacris to name a few but they are all a jolly good waste of talent. It is a wonder why they would have signed up for such an outing when they have fared much much better.

Truth is, it is pretty easy to leave the cinema feeling somewhat shortchanged by the whole experience. I mean, yes, it is probably a movie that is meant for leaving your brains at the door but there is a lot of material inside that could have been explored but the filmmakers chose not to and that is probably the thing that irks me the most.

Rounders gave poker a new lease of life in the western world - this could kick start a new poker boom in Asia."

The Best Hong Kong Movies of The year

Synopsis:

A self-styled “accident choreographer,” the Brain is a professional hitman who kills his victims by trapping them in well crafted “accidents” that look like unfortunate mishaps but are in fact perfectly staged acts of crime. Perennially plagued with guilt, he is also suspicious and morbid by nature. The recent avalanche of memories of his lost wife does not make things any easier.

After one mission accidentally goes wrong, causing the life of one of his men, the Brain is convinced that this accident has been choreographed: someone is out there plotting to terminate him and his team. He becomes increasingly paranoid, walking on the thin line between reality and delusion.

When he discovers that a mysterious insurance agent Fong is somewhat related one of the “accidents” he has staged, the Brain becomes obsessed that this man must be the mastermind behind a conspiracy to take him out. To regain his sanity and to save his life, he must strive to kill Fong before he makes his next move.

Movie Review:

Soi Cheang’s latest thriller is really no "Accident"- here is a tautly crafted and meticulously executed film that emerges as one of the best Hong Kong movies of the year. Indeed, thanks to the creative inspiration of producer Johnnie To’s Milkyway team, "Accident" is a crowning accomplishment for the director better known for some rather bizarre early works ("Horror Hotline…Big Head Monster", "Diamond Hill") and more recent over-the-top action flicks ("Dog Eat Dog", "Shamo").

Like many of To’s Milkway efforts, "Accident" boasts a high-concept premise- a group of professional assassins led by The Brain (Louis Koo) who stage elaborate accidents to disguise their crimes. In a brilliant opening sequence, the team take out a triad boss through a string of seemingly random, carefully choreographed events that to the police can only be described as accidental death.

Their next job is the wheelchair-bound father of a bespectacled man, their employer the old man’s very son, for reasons unknown to the team. Each step of their planning process is deliberately explained- from surveillance to brainstorming to practice to execution, director Soi Cheang fastidiously lays out each detail to emphasize the diligence they employ with each job. This first half of the film is a tense, gripping affair, as the Brain and his team (and the audience) are kept waiting for that opportune moment to put into action their plans.

But when it does happen, things go awry, and the Brain is convinced someone is out to get him and his team. His suspicion falls on one insurance agent (Ritchie Ren) whom he becomes preoccupied with, following, observing and noting down his perceived nemesis’ every move. Ever so effectively, director Soi Cheang shifts the tension built up in the first half of his film to a well-calibrated tone of obsession and paranoia in the latter half.

Is Ritchie Jen’s insurance agent a brilliant mastermind the likes of 'The Brain'? Or is it all a figment of The Brain’s own imagination? The question "Accident" poses is this- how can a person who has built his life on staging accidents be convinced that not all the world is a stage? Yes, like the "Final Destination" films, "Accident" flirts with the intriguing conundrum of whether the seemingly accidental, unfortunate events in our lives can in fact be deliberate and choreographed.

But "Accident" brings its own take on that subject in a very uniquely Johnnie To-ish way, right up to its love-it-or-hate-it climax (which this reviewer must admit he loved) that is most akin to that of previous Milkyway films "Running on Karma" or "Eye in the Sky". Fans of To will probably already spot similarities in their themes, but "Accident’s" finale is surprisingly intimate, moving and ultimately thought-provoking.

The real star of the show here is really Louis Koo. Not only does he appear in almost every scene of the film, his character is also both the lynchpin of what happens and also the movie’s emotional core. In "Accident", Louis Koo gives a solidly restrained performance that is always engaging and captivating to watch- first as the cool, calculated leader of the pack and then as the disturbed individual all alone with his doubts and fears.

There is really no "Accident" here how impressive this well-assembled film has come together. A confident turn by director Soi Cheang, a mesmerizing performance by lead Louis Koo and of course, the assured guidance of producer Johnnie To make this a pure-breed Milkyway classic. This is the kind of film that made To’s Milkyway the brand name it is today, and the kind of film that will give the flagging Hong Kong film industry a much-needed shot in the arm.

The Story And film Previews

Exorcist II: The Heretic the sequel to the 1973 film The Exorcist. Dr. Gene Tuskin works with troubled children, perhaps none more troubled than Regan MacNeil, who suffers from bad dreams and repressed memories. The memories she represses are of the time she was possessed by a demon.

Dr. Tuskin's invention, a device that hypnotizes two persons and links their minds together, reveals that the demon, named Pazuzu, still lurks within her. It is desperate to emerge again and wreak havoc. Meanwhile, Father Philip Lamont is ordered by his cardinal to investigate the death of Father Merrin, the priest who died while performing an exorcism on Regan.
Father Lamont undertakes his task reluctantly. He feels unworthy of his assignment. He also feels that Evil is literally an entity and that this entity is winning the battle over Good. His investigation takes him to Africa where he locates another recipient of Merrin's exorcising and learns something fascinating and terrible about locusts
After The Exorcist, with its genuinely shocking material (back in 1973, at least), there really wasn't anywhere to go. And no sequel was attempted for another four years, until 1977's The Exorcist 2: The Heretic. And while Exorcist 1 was a scorcher, this one's a stinker.
We meet Regan (Linda Blair, now a filled-out young teenager) only semi-aware of the horror who'd taken possession of her innocent body when she was just 12. She is living proof of the old maxim 'what you don't know won't hurt you', because her travelling mum has left her in the clutches of crazy psychiatrist (there's a tautology for you!) Dr Gene Tuskin (Louise Fletcher). And the mad doctor wants her to remember...
Sure enough, Dr Gene succeeds in re-awakening the horror. Only the heretical Catholic priest Father Lamont (Richard Burton) can stand between little Linda and the demon.
Now this movie does have some genuinely good actors. Linda Blair does a pretty good job reprising her earlier role, and Richard Burton, James Earl Jones as an African scientist and deep demon-enemy, and Max von Sydow are no slouches in the acting stakes. And all of those actors are able to put in patches of competent work.
But the script is so laughable, with the plot based on an unbelievable science-fiction premise which would not have been out of place in a 'Thrilling Wonder Stories' magazine of the 1920s, and the direction is so risible, with John Boorman showing himself to be totally out of his shallow depth, that the story never takes wing. There are some good special effects, but they're placed in a context which makes them just plain humorous.
Much of the time James Earl Jones seems to be about to burst into laughter while essaying his role. And Richard Burton, while good in patches, does sleep-walk much of the time, reading his lines in a broken fashion as if he was a victim of a Haiitian witch-doctor.
John Boohrman can't take all of the credit for making this movie such a dog. Louise Fletcher as the deranged psychiatrist Dr Tuskin is totally appalling. Now, she has acting credits a metre long, including an acclaimed appearance as Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. But if you were to judge her by this performance, you'd swear she'd never acted before, and would never act again. As an actress, she'd make a great picket-fence.
Watch online Movie Trailer free The Heretics Hollywood film

Not even the sight of Paul Henreid as Father Lamont's Cardinal can make up for Louise Fletcher's presence. She, not Regan, should have been exorcised on the spot. But I fear not even that would have saved this movie - though I've got to confess I found it pretty amusing at times, with a few scenes I will always treasure

Only through some fancy footwork, advice from his Aunt Helen (Mink Stole) and mentor Harry (Leslie Jordan), and a daring sexual escapade can Casey figure out how to set things right and perhaps even find the love he's been seeking

All You Can Eat Synopsis

This entry in the Eating Out series offers plenty of the sex-romp rowdiness that made the first two films into cult favorites. Rebekah Kochan returns as Tiffani, a wacky heroine who attempts to help her friend Casey (Daniel Skelton) find true love (or at least a sexy hunk).

All You Can Eat movie Review

An Ariztical Entertainment release of an EOSS production. Produced by Kirk Cruz, Michael Jack Shoel. Executive producer, Shoel. Co-producer, Phillip J. Bartell. Directed by Glenn Gaylord. Screenplay, Phillip J. Bartell, based on characters created by Q. Allan Brocka.

With: Rebekah Kochan, Daniel Skelton, Chris Salvatore, Michael E.R. Walker, Julia Cho, John Stallings, Maximiliano Torandell, Cristina Balmores, Mink Stole, Leslie Jordan.
The main attraction is "Eating" mainstay Rebekah Kochan as blonde, buxom L.A. "fag hag" and (hetero-)sexual carnivore Tiffani, who comes across more as an old-school drag queen than a biological female. (The thesp's comedic timing deserves a better showcase.) Viewers who make it past the dreadful opening funeral-parlor scenes get to see Tiffani's initially disastrous attempts to match new-kid-in-town Casey (Daniel Skelton) and local hunk Zack (Chris Salvatore). They're eventually righted in a decent equivalent to the first "Eating Out's" standout phone-sex setpiece. Scattered quotable quips aside, the script panders to its target aud via zero-body-fat casting and routine campy sensibility. But thesps and first-time feature helmer Glenn Gaylord modestly elevate matters when the material allows. Brief full-frontal views suggest MPAA rating isn't a goal.

The film Directed by Glenn Gaylord; written by Phillip J. Bartell and Q. Allan Brocka; director of photography, Tom Camarda; edited by Mr. Bartell; production designer, Justin Lieb; produced by Michael Jack Shoel and Kirk Cruz. At the Quad Cinema, 34 West 13th Street, Greenwich Village. Running time: 1 hour 20 minutes. This film is not rated.

Reviews

I saw a hilarious, sweet and a little sad film last night, Passport to Love, aka Chuye^.n Tình Xa Xu+'. The writer and director is a Vietnamese-American named Victor Vu. The film was in Vietnamese with English subtitles, and takes place in the present day Saigon and Southern California.

The central characters are Khang, a spoiled playboy son of a business tycoon, and Hieu, the studious and serious devoted son. Khang and Hieu go to SoCal to study and the experience changes both. Khang falls in love with the sexy Viet-American policewoman when she saves his life, then books him for DUI. His father cuts off his funding and he gets a menial job to support himself and win the policewoman’s respect. Khang is hysterical, always mugging for the camera and stealing scenes with his over-the-top shennanigans.

Synopsis

Eliza Welch (Uma Thurman) is like any other mom with two kids, a loving but absent-minded husband (Edwards), and her own mom-blog - yet she's having a day that would challenge even the toughest multi-tasker. Eliza has to throw her daughter's 6th birthday party while a movie crew takes over her block, chase her tireless two-year-old son, navigate playground politics, walk an incontinent dog, juggle a new career opportunity, and realize what is truly valuable in her life... all in one day.
"Motherhood" is a comedy that embraces the joys and heartache of female parenthood. Sometimes hilarious but always touching in its discovery of what one woman loses and gains in choosing to be a mother.
Eliza Welch is a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger who lives and works in two rent-stabilized apartments in a walk-up tenement building smack in the middle of an otherwise upscale Greenwich Village. Starting at dawn, her to-do list is daunting: prepare for and throw her daughter's 6th birthday party, mind her toddler son, battle for a parking space during an epic alternate side parking showdown, navigate playground politics with overbearing moms, and mend a rift with after posting her best friend's confession on her blog. On top of it all, Eliza decides to enter a contest run by an upscale parenting magazine. All she has to do is write 500 words answering the deceptively simple question, "What Does Motherhood Mean to Me?" In the process of trying by nightfall to put these thoughts into words that don't "sound like bad ad copy," Eliza rediscovers her own voice and realizes what is truly valuable in her life.

Motherhood Movie Review

From writer/director Katherine Dieckmann, the acclaimed filmmaker of DIGGERS and A GOOD BABY, comes MOTHERHOOD, starring Uma Thurman, Anthony Edwards and Minnie Driver. Shot entirely on location in New York’s West Village, this bittersweet comedy distills the dilemmas of the maternal state (marriage, work, self, and not necessarily in that order) into the trials and tribulations of one pivotal day. MOTHERHOOD forms a genre of one – no other movie has dedicated itself in quite this way to probing exactly what it takes to be a mother, with both wry humor and an acute sense of authenticity.

Eliza Welch (Thurman) is a former fiction writer-turned-mom-blogger with her own site, “The Bjorn Identity.” Putting her deeper creative ambitions on hold to raise her two children, Eliza lives and works in two rent-stabilized apartments in a walk-up tenement building smack in the middle of an otherwise upscale Greenwich Village. Eliza’s good-natured but absent-minded husband (Edwards) seems tuned out to his wife’s conflicts, not to mention basic domestic reality, while her best friend Sheila (Minnie Driver) understands this – and Eliza -- all too well.
MOTHERHOOD takes place in a single day that pushes to the tipping point Eliza’s fundamental fear she’s lost herself. Starting at dawn, her to-do list is daunting: prepare for and throw her daughter’s 6th birthday party, mind her toddler son, battle for a parking space during an epic alternate side parking showdown, navigate playground politics with overbearing moms, and mend a rift with after posting her best friend’s confession on her blog. On top of it all, Eliza decides to enter a contest run by an upscale parenting magazine. All she has to do is write 500 words answering the deceptively simple question, “What Does Motherhood Mean to Me?”
The film takes place over the course of a single day, as Eliza (Uma Thurman) looks after her two young children while struggling to hang on to her own identity as an aspiring writer. Her husband (Anthony Edwards) is preoccupied with his own less-than-stellar career, and her pregnant best friend (Minnie Driver) also needs her attention and advice.
The film has little new to say about the pressures of trying to juggle personal ambition and familial needs, but what makes this outing worthwhile are the vivid details of trying to fight these battles in New York in 2009. Eliza encounters plenty of other frazzled moms on the playground where some people come to spot celebrities. (Jodie Foster has a hilarious cameo as another mom being stalked by paparazzi.) All of the vignettes concerning rude neighbors, cramped apartments and parking nightmares are so well caught that we feel ourselves immersed in Eliza's maddening routines.Watch online Movie Trailer free Motherhood Hollywood film

Dieckmann seems aware that Eliza can seem a bit self-indulgent in her carping. An older neighbor comments at one point that women of an earlier generation dealt with the same pressures but never dreamt of complaining, and her remark seems apt. But Thurman brings a lot of grace and conviction to her portrayal, and Edwards makes an engaging foil. The movie's highlight is a scene with a minor character: an Indian messenger (played by charismatic newcomer Arjun Gupta) who strikes some sexual sparks with the bedraggled Eliza. His frenzied dance with Thurman is almost as memorable as her famous dance scene with John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction.

How apt it is, after the successful Taiwan movie Cape No. 7, that we are treated with this Taiwan production starring the Golden Horse winner’s Van Fan and Chie Tanaka. Oh, the star gazing doesn’t stop here. Throw in names like Annie Liu, Ethan Ruan, Alec Su, Ken Chu, Makiyo Claire Kuo Jing, Blue Lan, Lu Yi Ching, Charge Pu Hsueh Liang and Chang Hsiao Yen, and you’d get this omnibus of love stories that markets itself as the ultimate love experience. If you are a fan of these well known Hong Kong and Taiwan TV personalities and pop idols, then you’d be dazzled by the star gazing that’s in store for you.

The four stories centre themselves on different themes like death, memories, communication and destiny. Directed by Giddens Ko, Vincent Fang Wen Shan (Jay Chou’s favourite lyricist), Chen Yi Xian and Mickey Huang Zi Jiao (the famous TV host), viewers are brought onto a 92 minute razzle dazzle of love embodied by melodrama, tragedy, music and comedy.

When you have four filmmakers with four distinct styles, it’s only natural that you prefer one over the other. The first story about sentiments of two strangers sharing the same voice stars Fan and Liu, and the natural chemistry between them distracts you from the unnecessary plot twists that prove to be gimmicky. The second story about the production of a music video (as helmed by Fang, of course) stars Liu and Lan, and while the two good lookers provide eye candy for the younger viewers, the somewhat slipshod storytelling shows the thinness of the plot. The third story starring the very popular Ruan is a mood piece about the importance of communication with your loved one, and it easily stands out as the most competent of the lot. When you reach the fourth story directed by Huang, you wonder whether you should tolerate the over the top acting and exaggerated comedic style.

If your expectations for this movie aren’t too high, the four tales are easy to sit through. There isn’t much thinking involved, and there aren’t many feelings for the protagonists either. We guess that would be the down side of featuring so many stars in a weakly plotted movie, because all attention would be given to spotting the countless cameo appearances throughout the movie.

If you are a male viewer watching this with your female companion, expect reactions like: “Look, it’s Alec Su from The Little Tigers! Look, it’s Ken Chu from F4! Look, look, look! Ethan Ruan is gorgeous! Look, look, look! Blue Lan is simply charming!” Yes, you’ve been warned.

The Die Is Cast (Spanish) Synopsis

Felipe is regarded as an actor who brings bad luck to his colleagues. He becomes convinced of his misery when he is unsuccessful in his attempts to leave his bad luck. Similarly, his half brother Guillermo was dismissed from his job and is dumped by his girlfriend. While his father, Victor is informed of a brain tumor that will end his life in a few days. Don Victor calls his children to express his last wish: to revive a situation that happened many years ago when he was in love with a theatre star. The children try to fulfill the wish of their father but the bad luck of Felipe takes their mission to failure as they are assaulted and stripped of all their belongings. While Felipe tries to cope with his bad luck and a bad relationship with his father, Guillermo begins to take tango lessons to woo a girl whom he fell in love with. This is the story of two people who, after solving their inner conflicts, get a big change in their lives.

Review

When I was reading an interview with Sebastian Borensztein several days ago in the newspaper "La Nación", and was understanding that he had chosen the cinema for not turning back, I realized that "the luck was tossed" for him, and that his first film, "La suerte está echada" ("The luck is tossed"), would be an interesting project. He began writing from nowhere, he says. He also comments that he knew the ending but he didn't know how he'd develop it. Anyway, his own script relates the history of two half brothers that don't seem to meet very often, and get together to complete their father's (José Gallardou) last will; and what will…
One of them is Felipe (Marcelo Mazzarello), a theater not very renowned theater actor who lives of his passion. He runs in the morning, breathes the air of the city, and when he's not home his answering machine announces: "And the Oscar goes to… ". The sentence finishes with his name and the tone to leave the message. But this morning, when he goes running, something is foreseen strange. There's no one in the streets, everything's deserted…What occurs to him that day, unchains what is maybe the main axis of the story; the luck or, in the case of Felipe, the bad luck, because he is "mufa."
Guillermo(Gastón Pauls), on the other side, can't reconcile his dream due to the alarm of an isolated car that doesn't cease to sound at nights; what leads to his late arrivals at work, where he has a very important position. To this we add his relationship with Clara (Julieta Cardinali),that seems to go worse than the day before. However, in the moment of the brothers' encounter those topics are not touched. After listening their father's order, they leave outside and their chat is limited to Guillermo's first question: "How are you?". "Great", Felipe responds him. "And you, how are you? ", asks the other one now; and after doubting Guillermo answers: "Great".

These two actors carry the weight of the whole movie, and they fulfill their task without problems. Marcelo Mazzarello is that actor we never mention, but we know he's there. His abilities are showy, although surprisingly it is said that Borensztein wrote Felipe's role thinking of him. Maybe it was made to his measure, but in one way or another, his interpretation is remarkable. Then there's Gastón Pauls, who always worries about giving a different personality to his characters, and when composing the characteristics of these, ends up with something different but still incredible; even when he played himself in that beautiful movie that is "Sábado" ("Saturday").

The moment narrated previously and other more (the one of the robbery, the one of the meeting with the "mufas", the one of the theatrical casting) show Borensztein's capacity to write comedy. With very simple shots, his objective is not to unite the brothers, who live their separately. The script of his dramatic comedy doesn't want to move anybody, neither to put things that sound right; escaping like that from the pretentious (in moments where it could have happened, like in the speeches about the luck) and culminating in something completely fresh in times of first features as the intentionally complex "Un Buda". Alejandro Lerner's music also highlights, because it is not a strategy for taking us to the cinema for his songs, when the music doesn't speak a single word, relating with the character's state of spirit and reviving only musical times of the experienced artist.Watch online Movie Trailer free La Suerte está echada The Die Is Cast Spanish film The film Directed by Sebastián Borensztein

In other words, the director knows that he didn't come to make a work of art, or at least he doesn't pretend to; therefore I deduce that it will be a pleasure to have him in our cinema during the next years.

The film Directed by Karin Albou
I saw this last month at the 2009 Palm Springs International film Festival. This is the second feature film of writer/director/actress Karin Albou who received critical acclaim for her debut film La Petite Jersalem. As as writer and director Albou seems to have a promising career ahead of her as she knows how to put a film together and get the best out of her cast including herself as an actress as she plays the role of Myriam's stern but loving, smart and hard working mother Tita.

The film is set in 1942 in German occupied Tunisia as the German's are vying for the support of the Muslim population to be their allies in the promise of independence for Tunisia. 16 year old Nour (Olympe Borval) is a Muslim engaged to her cousin Khaled (Najib Oudghiri). Nour's best friend since their earliest childhood is Myriam (Lizzie Brouchere). Myriam is Jewish and the German occupation has brought understandably hard times and tension for the Jewish Tunisian population. Myriam longs for the love that her friend Nour sees in Khaled but Myriam is betrothed to a wealthy and much older Doctor Raoul (Simon Abkarian) who is being forced to work in sympathy to the Nazi occupation. Photographed by cinematographer Laurent Brunet this is a good film but despite the war setting there is not a lot of war action and the film centers around the relationship of Myriam and Nour and this could be categorized as a chick flick. I liked it though and would give it a 7.5 out of 10 and recommend it.

Synopsis

Starring John Leguizamo as TV reporter Manolo Bonilla faced with a journalism dilemma; Cronicas is a suspenseful thriller that questions who the true monster is: the criminal, the media, or our society? Manolo Bonilla is a star reporter for a Miami-based tabloid TV show who is determined to unearth a serial killer that hunts children in a small town in Ecuador. But how far will Manolo go to get the story? The closer he gets to uncovering the truth, the more he finds his carefully planned story spinning dangerously out of control. An examination of journalistic ethics, the film explores the willingness of the media to surrender its morals for a shot at fame and profit.

The hot and humid village of Babahoyo, Ecuador is besieged by an elusive serial killer. The police have no clues but this mystery has become an obsession for Miami-based tabloid television reporter Manolo Bonilla (John Leguizamo) who is convinced breaking this story will make him a star. Bonilla has traveled to the remote village with his producer, Marisa (Leonor Watling) and cameraman, Ivan (José Maria Yazpik) to cover the story for the tabloid TV show "One Hour With The Truth". Manolo has dubbed the killer as the "Monster of Babahoyo" on the show and is determined to uncover the killer's true identity. Tension in the town reaches a boiling point when Vinicio Cepeda (Damián Alcázar), a poor traveling salesman, accidentally runs over a child, and an angry mob led by the child's father, Don Lucho (Henry Layana), attacks him in the streets. Both Vinicio and Don Lucho are arrested. Manolo, who happens to be present during the incident, interviews both men inside a jail teeming with violence. Vinicio tells Manolo that he has information about the "Monster," but in exchange for it, he wants Manolo to do a story exposing his unjust arrest to sway public opinion. After checking out Vinicio's information, Manolo immediately suspects that Vinicio himself could be the killer, but chooses not to tell the corrupt local authorities; he'd rather use the information to make a great story for his show. How far will Bonilla go to get his story? Where is the line between a journalist revealing the truth and inventing it? How powerful is the media? Palm Pictures and Anhelo Productions present CRONICAS, written and directed by Sebastián Cordero (RATAS, RATONES, RATEROS) and produced by Alfonso Cuarón (HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN) and Jorge Vergara (Y TU MAMÁ TAMBIÉN) and Guillermo del Toro (HELLBOY), Bertha Navarro and Isabel Dávalos. The executive producer is Frida Torresblanco.
In the sometimes savvy media melodrama "Crónicas," John Leguizamo plays Manolo Bonilla, the charismatic star reporter for a tabloid investigative news show, "One Hour With the Truth," that originates in Miami and is broadcast across Latin America. A swaggering little fame monger ablaze with ambition and hot to pounce on the next gory sensation, Manolo descends with his producer, Marisa (Leonor Watling), and his cameraman, Ivan (José María Yazpik), on the dirt-poor Ecuadorian village of Babahoyo.

Cronicas Hollywood Movie Review:

Manolo has come to interview the relatives of three local children who were slaughtered by the notorious "Monster of Babahoyo," the television nickname for a serial murderer of children who rapes and tortures his victims before killing them.

His arrival coincides with the return to Babahoyo of Vinicio Cepeda (Damián Alcázar), a scruffy, soulful-eyed traveling Bible salesman. Driving into the village, Vinicio accidentally strikes and kills a young boy who darts in front of his truck.

Aghast and guilt-stricken, Vinicio backs his vehicle away from the body. But as he does, he is set upon by villagers swarming around the scene, who assume he was trying to escape. Already hysterical over the killings, they drag him from his truck, and the victim's father, Don Lucho (Henry Layana), furiously slops gasoline over him. A match is tossed. Manolo's crew films it all.

This harrowing scene of mob violence and an attempted lynching under the eye of the camera makes a great beginning. The reluctance of these tabloid news hounds to intervene says it all about live television's icy voyeurism. Anyone who has observed a news crew in action will recognize the sense of entitlement and the high-handed attitudes of jaded media types who act like God's handpicked snoops as they nose around in downscale environments where they are both adored and feared.
He coyly claims to have information about the Monster of Babahoyo. As Manolo coaxes out his story, Vinicio tells of meeting the killer in his travels and hearing his boastful confession. To prove he's not making it up, he directs Manolo to a burial site where the crew finds a girl's body but refrains from telling the police.

The movie begins losing credibility at the point at which "Crónicas" narrows to an ambiguous cat-and-mouse game played by the egomaniacal reporter sensing the scoop of his life and the prisoner whom Manolo immediately suspects is the mass murderer. Although the screenplay throws in obstacles and contradictions to deepen the texture, "Crónicas" never regains a secure footing.

Nothing that follows in "Crónicas" (the word means chronicles, or news reports), which was written and directed by Sebastián Cordero, lives up to this initial tableau of chaos, grief and media intrusion. Although the fire is put out and Vinicio and his attacker are both jailed, the village is still in an uproar, and the chances that Vinicio will escape vigilante retribution seem slender. When Manolo, pursuing the incident for a story, interviews Vinicio in prison, the desperate Bible salesman tries to bargain with the reporter to shoot a segment that might influence the judge to set him free.

We meet Vinicio's new wife, Esperanza (Gloria Leiton), and her young son from a previous marriage, Robert (Luiggi Pulla), to whom Vinicio is a devoted caretaker. Meanwhile, Manolo dallies with Marisa, who is married to the all-powerful news anchor in Miami; the fate of the story being prepared changes from hour to hour as Manolo resists pressure from on high to leave Ecuador and pursue another story in Medellín, Colombia. A strait-laced police captain, Bolívar Rojas (Camilo Luzuriaga), does his feeble best to take charge of the investigation that Manolo has commandeered for his own career ends.Watch online Movie Trailer free Cronicas Spanish film .The film Directed by Sebastián Cordero

Although plenty of movies have already explored the bottom-feeding, ratings-hungry values of tabloid television, the subject certainly merits repeated scrutiny, and as "Crónicas" reaches its wobbly conclusion, it doesn't sacrifice its cynical point of view. But by the end, it has also become a film divided against itself. The more the cat-and-mouse game between prisoner and reporter points it in the direction of "The Silence of the Lambs," the closer it inches toward the sort of exploitation it condemns; for me, that's too close for "Crónicas" to be taken without a big grain of salt.

Scheduled to hit the theaters on 9th October 2009, ‘Love Ka Tadka’ revolves around the life of Aditya (Sameer Dattani) and Sheetal (Nauheed Cyrusi). Aditya is a middle class guy, who works as an executive in ‘Easy Money’. Struggling to make ends meet, he has only three main things in his life - his work, his friend Vicky and his corrupt boss. One fine day, Aditya bumps into Sheetal, a beautiful girl who mistakes him for a ‘Romeo’. And every time Aditya tries to clear the misunderstanding and prove his innocence, following the advice of Vicky, he ends up creating more mix-ups and confusions. The film Directed by Gautam Adhikari,
In the process of clearing the confusion and bringing everything on track, Aditya ends up falling in love with Sheetal. Soon, the two of them get married also, but the story does not culminate in a ‘Happily Ever After’ (‘picture abhi baaki hai mere dost’). In fact, this is where the actual story begins. Rather, it starts getting more chaotic and even much more amusing. The very first problem is that Sheetal considers Aditya to be a Manager, who lives in a plush condominium (as per the lies he told her, to woo her). As expected, she becomes livid on learning that he is an executive and lives in a chawl.
Inspite of the difficulties, Aditya and Sheetal manage to sort out their differences and also pool in money to buy an apartment. However, before this could happen, Sheetal's dad (Satish Kaushik) insists on coming to stay with her. The couple somehow manages to make him stay in Vicky’s house, till they find an apartment of their own. As if this wasn’t enough, when they go to buy their new house, they run short on funds. In order to help them out, Vicky ends up cutting a deal with the house owner. He promises that either they will pay the balance within a year or forfeit even that amount which they have already given to the owner.

After crossing all hurdles, Aditya and Sheetal manage to get their own house. However, just when they think that everything is fine, a new problem crops up. They come to know that their house is in a strictly vegetarian society. While they agree to compromise on the fact, Sheetal's father, who is strictly an anti vegetarian, presents a problem. As it is, he is not happy with Aditya. So, the couple decides to hide the fact that the society is pure vegetarian. What follows is a series of comic situations, where Aditya and Sheetal try to do a balancing act between the latter’s father and the society members, by smuggling the forbidden food items into the house.

Astro Boy Hollywood Movie Review:

Astro Boy is a computer-animated 3-D film based on the highly successful Japanese franchise of the same name by Osamu Tezuka.

Family friendly fare has returned to theaters with a vengeance the past few weeks with animated fare such as "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs," the "Toy Story" re-releases in 3-D and for older kids, "Where The Wild Things Are." Next weekend a new hero comes on the scene with the big screen debut of "Astro Boy."

Born over 50 years ago in a Japanese Manga, "Astro Boy" is the story of a young robot (voiced by Freddie Highmore) who was created by a brilliant scientist (Nic Cage) in the image of the son he's lost. Unable to meet the expectations of his still grieving father, Astro Boy embarks on an adventure where he gets entangled in an underground world of robot gladiators (fun!) before he returns home to make peace with his creator.

Summit Entertainment just released two new clips from "Astro Boy" that are embedded in the story below. Or, to see larger versions of "Robot Games" and "Peacekeeper Battle" click here and here respectively.
