Sithara, noted for his films like Mazhavilkkavadi, and Jathakam, makes a comeback to Malayalam playing Lisamma. But when the director narrated the story to Sitharaa, she was more than inclined to be in the role at the earliest. Rajasenan clarifies that this new film, though with out any superstar, definitely have a super story that is sure to cater to the family audiences, with which every household can readily relate to.

Rehman plays Raja Mohan while Sivaji Guruvayoor plays their father Sivamohanthampi. Also in the cast are Jagathy Sreekumar, Kalpana, Mukesh, Indrans, Sindhumenon, Janett, Drishya and Sumithra.

Rajasenan was initially reluctant to face the camera for the role, But with the support and encouragement of his Friends in the filed, he made it sure that the character was safe with his limited expressions and fits his age, mannerisms and figure. The popular directors of the filed like Shafi, Thulasidas, Sundardas and Mecartin, who were all his assistants earlier, were called upon to handle the shoot and to support him in his first acting exercise. All of them remained in the sets for days to make sure that their guru is performing well before the camera.

Review

Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s latest film, the State award winning ‘Oru Pennum Randaanum’, based on four short stories by the late Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, is set in the 1940’s. The film is an anthology of sorts, telling four different stories one after the other. (Adoor’s last film ‘Naalu Pennungal’ also represented this genre). ‘Kallante Katha’ narrates the story of a young child, who is the son of a thief named Neelakantan (M.R.Gopakumar) and who is caught between love for his father and the stigma of being a thief’s son. The second story ‘Niyamavum Neethiyum’ is about two police constables (played by Nedumudi Venu and Jagannathan) who frame an innocent rickshaw-puller in a robbery case in a bid to save their jobs. The third story ‘Oru Koottukaaran’ is about two friends, one an advocate (Jagadeesh) and the other a college student (Sudheesh), the latter approaching the former seeking help in a very complicated matter. The fourth story, ‘Pankiyamma’, is about what happens to two men (Ravi Vallathol and Manoj.K.Jayan) who come into the life of the beautiful Pankiyamma (Praveena). While one of them is her husband, the other is her lover. Things take a totally different turn for them and both of then finally land up in jail.
The four stories are narrated by Adoor with a purpose- to highlight how men are led to commit crimes. The film focuses on how socio-economic factors are behind personal crimes. Adoor has been true to the stories and he has succeeded in capturing the atmosphere of the 1940’s in a very effective manner. With brilliant performances, excellent technical features, captivating background score and a well-worked out script as its highlight, ‘Oru Pennum Randaanum’ stands out as a film that delivers strong, relevant messages. The film of course is not box office material.

DID YOU KNOW? Oru Pennum Randaanum is based on legendary writer Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai’s short stories. The film is divided into four stories which are not necessarily connected to one another. Adoor had made a similar film Naalu Pennungal, a few months back. Oru Pennum Randaanum won five major honours at the recent Kerala State Film awards.

STORYLINE: The stories have been titled Kallante Makan, Niyamavum Neethiyum, Oru Koottukaran and Pankiyamma. The first one is about a kid’s anguish about his father, who is a robber. The second one is about how a poor man is made a thief by two corrupt cops. The third is about two friends who are trying to hush up an unwanted pregnancy. The fourth story has Pankiyamma as the heroine. She has a few men dancing to her tunes and fighting each other to earn her love.

REVIEW: Well, Adoor, the master filmmaker is at his best. The stories have been told in a simple manner without any clichéd melodrama or boring philosophy that has taken the viewers away from offbeat cinema. The film shows a beautiful picture of Kerala in the 1940s. The visuals, music, sound and costumes add to the effect. Watch out for the stellar performance by Praveena as Pankiyamma. In these times when the heroines are there as dumb mannequins who sing, dance and obey the hero without using their brains, Praveena’s character stands apart.

Katha Parayum Theruvoram Malayalam Movie

Release Date: 31 Jul 2009

Review

Katha Parayum Theruvoram movie tells the story of four children who were brought up in the street. They were under the custody of a street gang. One day they escaped from the mafia who made them beg along the streets.

They reached in a town and planned to lead normal life by doing job. But it was not an easy task since people were not ready to give them job as they were children. The boys started collecting scrap materials and sold to survive.

Once they were wandering along the street they heard a cry of a child. It was from the bag of a man

Sreenivasan has an uncanny knack of keeping himself in the limelight. His latest film "Katha Parayumbol", in which he dons the three-in-one role of writer-actor-producer, is the clear winner of the season. Directed by debutant M. Mohanan, the film has Mammootty in an extended cameo; but it is Sreenivasan who stays in the viewers' mind.

Sreenivasan plays a character that is outstanding only in its ordinariness. But he elevates it to a class of its own. His is the role of Balan, a barber in a village fighting modernisation in his own antiquated ways.

He can't afford a revolving chair, now an essential for his trade. His tools are out-dated and he cannot afford to replace them. And no authorised agency will lend him money because he refuses to grease the palms of the powers-that-be.

Balan is a middle-aged man with three kids in school. He had eloped and married his sweetheart and settled in this hilly village, far from the urban world. He is an object of ridicule for all and sundry. His kids are nearly thrown out of the school for non-payment of fees. His wife has no idea where their next meal will come from.

Balan's only defence mechanism against the harsh existential realities is his wit and his barbed tongue.

But, all this changes when superstar Ashok Raj (Mammootty) makes an appearance in the village for a film shoot. Ashok is supposedly Balan's childhood friend. So the whole village converges around Balan seeking his favour for a meeting with the superstar. Balan is reluctant to approach the star thinking that Ashok may have forgotten his lowly friend in these intervening years.

The ultimate clincher for this film is its script. Authored by Sreenivasan, it is so layered that every frame has a comment to make about the world and every line of the dialogue on the mores of the society. The craze for celebrities and the problems of leading a principled life are discussed without being preachy or in-your-face.

Mammootty has the dignified presence of a real star and his aura and the mythical persona that surrounds him give a lifelike feel to the character of Ashok Raj.

There are other characters that fill up the space to present a microcosmic universe. The moneylender played by Innocent and the pseudo-intellectual poet played by Salim Kumar are hilarious. Meena plays the well-etched character of Balan's beautiful wife.

"Katha Parayumbol" has Sreenivasan's stamp all over it, and can claim to be one of his best
