Movie Reviews :

The above summary is a quote from a reviewer who stated it better than I could. "A journey past the known and into the unknown, ... this film ... uses sci-fi elements to enable the main character - a physicist whose specialty is quantum mechanics - to selflessly uplift and have an effect on those around him in a positive manner." Bill Sage does a marvelous job of character development. The supporting cast is excellent as well. In the interest of full disclosure, since I had a bit part in this film: Lest you think this is a self-serving review, my small scene was cut.
The audience all left the theater feeling better than we did when we came in. I urge you to see this unique film.
I saw "The Scientist" at the sneak preview on March 2nd. The only thing I found enjoyable about the film was the fact that so many people I am connected with had something to do with it. The ONLY actor whose performance actually made an impression on me was that of Adam LeFevre. I thought the plot moved along entirely too slow, not to mention there were several points at which the sound was PAINFULLY loud. I left the theater feeling offended, not only by the abuse to my eardrums, but also by the fact that the main character decided to influence his neighbor about her reproductive choices. It was obvious that she didn't really want to have an abortion in the first place, but it was his arrogance in that regard that I found so offensive. It also didn't seem as though the writers actually did any research as far as what kind of process and treatment by the clinic a woman experiences when seeking an abortion. It's a sign of ongoing dysfunction that the couple "connected" once they decided to keep the baby. It made me unsure if he was being sincere or just faking it to get her to do what he wanted. I left wondering if this was just anti-choice propaganda disguised as a sci-fi film. And I don't think that is what it was supposed to be. It needed to focus more on the scientist himself, his work, and his family rather than the neighbors'. I am happy for all my friends who got to be in it, but otherwise utterly disappointed.

Gunless Hollywood Movie Reviews :
Gunless — a wily Canadian western comedy starring Paul Gross that  opens next Friday — might never have made it to the screen had its  co-producer, Niv Fichman, the Toronto filmmaker renowned for such  high-toned movies as Passchendaele, The Red Violin, Ravel’s Brain and  Silk, not stumbled into a mountain-ringed valley during a wine tour of  B.C.’s Okanagan region with fellow connoisseurs du vin, former  Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson, and writer John Ralston Saul.

“It was beautiful country . . . it looked like a desert surrounded by  snow-capped mountains, with lots of dust, and even sagebrush blowing  around,” Fichman told the Star.
“I couldn’t believe we were in Canada, in this wonderful restaurant  in B.C. wine country. There was something authentically western about it  — big blue skies, lots of sunshine. I promised myself that if I ever  made a western, this would be the perfect location.”
As it turned out, Fichman soon found himself working on a script with  Vancouver writer-director Bill Phillips and co-producer Steve Hedges,  about an American outlaw, the Montana Kid (Gross), who inadvertently  winds up in a tiny hamlet, Barclay’s Brush (pop. 17), on the northern  side of the U.S.-Canada border in the late 1800s, a place where handguns  are illegal and gunslingers have no cachet.
“Everyone was thinking we should shoot in Alberta, till I remembered  this little valley in B.C.,” Fichman said. “When the others saw it,  there was no doubt about where Barclay’s Brush would be built.”
The best westerns — Shane, Deadwood, Unforgiven — are notable for  their town sets, and the creators of Gunless were determined to make  Barclay’s Brush as memorable as the movie’s main characters, even  working within the constraints of a Canadian budget.

As envisioned by Phillips and production designer Matthew Budgeon,  Barclay’s Brush was constructed by a local crew from aged, cast-off wood  from nearby sawmills, and furnished with objects from Okanagan antique  stores, museums and flea markets.
It ended up consuming a million of the movie’s $8.5-million  allotment, Fichman said.
“That’s totally disproportionate. But the location was perfect, and  the topography of the town, with facades and roof-lines that reflected  the angles of the mountains in the distance, made it worthwhile.
“It meant we had to shoot the movie in five weeks instead of six, but  there was a built-in efficiency in creating the set from scratch. We  saved and money by not having to move crews from one site to another,  and every detail, right down to the nails, was authentic. The town  became an integral part of the movie experience.”
Creating a movie town from the ground up, even one with just six or  seven buildings, is daunting, said Budgeon on the phone from his home in  Vancouver. Phillips, Fichman and Hedges all give him credit for  something truly unique, a set that measures up to the highest cinematic  western standards.
“It’s a huge responsibility,” Budgeon said. “Westerns are the  cornerstone of modern cinema. We looked at lots of historical and movie  references, but in the end we had to create something that had never  been done before, a Canadian western town that reflected what was going  on in Canada at the time — the immigration routes, the railroad, ties to  the British Empire. We weren’t making a documentary, but we had to be  true to the time and place.”

Timer  Synopsis :What if a clock could count down to the moment you meet your soul mate? In this alternate version of present day Los Angeles, a revolutionary device called the TiMER fulfills this very fantasy. For a reasonable installation fee and a moderate monthly charge, a TiMER is implanted in the wrist and promises to accurately display the number of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the owner’s date with destiny.
When implanted in a person's wrist, a TiMER counts down to the day the wearer finds true love. But Oona O'Leary faces the rare dilemma of a blank TiMER. Her soul mate - whoever and wherever he is - has yet to have a TiMER implanted. Staring down the barrel of thirty and tired of waiting for her would-be life partner to get off the dime, Oona breaks her own rules and falls for Mikey, a charming and inappropriately young supermarket clerk with a countdown of four months

Hollywood Movie Reviews :
I attended the World Premiere of "TiMER" at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival. This is one of those "sweet little indies" I look for at festivals. They are few and far between but finding a film like this makes it worth the effort.
"TiMER" is, on the face of it, a romantic comedy. But its premise is so original and offbeat -- the film crosses over into the science fiction genre -- that, like the best indies, it's hard to pigeonhole. The basic idea (not a spoiler since this is revealed even before the opening credits) is that an implanted device on a person's wrist counts down to the moment the wearer meets his/her true love. It's based on the notion that everyone has one soulmate out there, somewhere, and each person's timer will go off at precisely the same moment when the fateful meeting takes place.
First-time writer/director Jac Schaeffer's script is smart and brilliantly executed by some of the best actors in the business, including Emma Caulfield ("Beverly Hills, 90210, Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), Michelle Borth ("Wonderland"), John Patrick Amedori ("The Butterfly Effect, Stick It, Gossip Girl"), and Desmond Harrington ("Wrong Turn, Dexter").
Emma Caulfield's poignant performance leads the way as the orthodontist Oona, who shares a uniquely powerful bond with stepsister Steph. This gives Steph a private window into Oona's true vulnerability. Caulfield is simply angelic, with a light that shines from within. Steph is a slightly domesticated punk girl, with an acerbic wit to match. Enter John Patrick Amedori as Mikey. To Oona, he appears as a shallow, uneducated supermarket checker with a hopeless future. Mikey is like an unruly dog who's outgrown his puppy years while retaining the innocence of youth which is undeniably appealing to Oona. Amedori wins the comedy award hands down, with the film's funniest lines and the ability to do more with inappropriate facial expressions than any dialogue could. Those expressions elicited the biggest laughs from the festival audiences. Desmond Harrington plays Dan the Man, buttoned-down and well-meaning, with a slightly brash exterior that can be endearing when he makes the effort. The talented supporting cast couldn't be better. Watch for Hayden McFarland as younger brother Jesse, who won the affection of the audience with some of the most heartfelt scenes in the movie.

The Good Heart  Synopsis :

"The Good Heart" stars Cox as Jacques, the curmudgeonly owner of a gritty New York dive bar that serves as home to a motley assortment of professional drinkers. Jacques is determinedly drinking and smoking himself to death when he meets Lucas (Dano), a homeless young man who Jacques decides will be a fitting heir to the bar after his own inevitable passing.

Hollywood Movie Reviews :
Dagur Kari's film The good heart was a good way to start a film festival in my eyes. I just got back from the screening, and although this film i heavily dramatic, i have to say the audience was laughing quite a bit, as was I. Its not a comedy though, just a film that some great comedic reliefs, and does a great job portraying a story of human interaction. In this case, Brian Cox is spectacular as a bitter, foul-mouthed and at times cynical barowner who takes in a homeless man in his early 20s (Dano) who he meets while being roommates with at the hospital where he has his 5th heart-attack.

The film's strength lies in its script which gave its talented actors (mainly Cox, but also some talented character actors in the supporting cast who played some regulars at the bar). The cinematography is perfect and has aesthetic qualities, colors that show authenticity of the bar atmosphere. the Score is also quite suitable, and perfectly adds to the whole experience. Dagur Kari created somewhat of a gem with this film. perhaps it was also an advantage that i saw this in an impressive venue, on opening night of cinequest in the "California Theatre" with what seemed like almost 7 or 8 hundred people in attendance.

After making such a great debut film Noi Albino, and following that up with the fairly enjoyable Dark Horse, it pains me to tell you that The Good Heart is a real let down. Apart from it's look I can't pick out any other positives. It's puzzling to know why the director decided to make this film in English, apart from maybe a greater chance at financial success, as the story and characters have no relevance to their surroundings. It's nauseatingly quirky, desperately predictable and me and my friends were extremely disappointed.
I plead to Dagur Kári, the director, to go back to where he knows and develop his trade. One more film like this and he will be well and truly struck off my list.

Mercy Synopsis:

Johnny Ryan (Scott Cann) is a successful young romance novelist who doesn’t actually believe in love. When he meets the beautiful and mysterious Mercy (Wendy Glenn) at the launch party of his latest book, Johnny’s world is suddenly turned upside down. Shockingly, she is the only major critic who dislikes his book. A cynic by nature, Johnny becomes determined to find the depth that Mercy says he is lacking and, in the process, falls in love. With an all star supporting cast including James Caan and Dylan McDermott MERCY explores the struggle of maintaining a relationship, and the possibility of losing it all.
I saw "Mercy" as the closing night film at the Gen Art Film Festival. This was one of those movies where I didn't have any real feeling about it going into the screening. Basically. it was one of those films that if I saw it that would be cool, but if I didn't that's OK too. With that being said, I did venture into the screening and below is what I thought of it.

Hollywood Movie Reviews :
In "Mercy," Scott Caan plays Johnny, a successful fictional writer, who writes about love but has never been in love. One night at his latest book party, Johnny is up to his usual flirtatious nature when he eyes Mercy (Wendy Glenn) from across the room. He walks over to her but Mercy isn't falling for his playboy routine and all of Johnny's pick up lines. Johnny is taking back because Mercy isn't falling for his charming nature and feels that there is something else to this girl that he has never seen or felt before. Johnny now has to question if his idea of love is a "fictitious" feeling or if he is truly is falling in love. An interesting and sometimes dark film ensues...

After having mixed feelings on actually seeing the film, I am glad that I did in fact see it. While the film itself didn't blow me away, it definitely had a well written story and solid performances all around. I think the script itself, which was written by Scott Caan is probably what made it work for the most part. Like any script there are some flaws and definitely a lot of clichéd moments here. I think we all heard this plot outline before but the way the story was written basically is what made it seem out of the ordinary. What I mean by that is Mr. Caan decided to overlap a lot of the acts and kind of blur them together. A lot of films do this but very few that I seen do it successfully. This one did a good job of it which made an overused idea seem fresh.

Hollywood Movie Reviews :
SyFy Channel continues to plumb new depths in sci-fi programming with this entry from "auteur" Eric Forsberg. Mega Piranha stands out as the consummate example of low quality, mindless fodder cranked out for the indiscriminating pre-teen viewer. Sadly, a generation of impressionable kids are being trained to accept this level of crap as acceptable entertainment.
The screenplay is a decadent mess. With its tale of lab-created monster fishes, the story traces its lineage back to the original Frankenstein story, the seminal work of science fiction. For more than a century, the sci-fi genre has served up some of the most daring and provocative explorations of morality as it pertains to science and technology. Unfortunately, any attempt at such intelligent or provocative story-telling has been jettisoned in this hack effort.
The characters are muddled and clichéd, and unlike the original  Frankenstein (and Alien, and other classic sci-fi works) this film has  no moral compass whatsoever. Token female Tiffany (someone's idea of a  milf, I suppose) plays a scientist who helps create a monster form of  piranha, although she later describes herself as a "greenpeacer" (when  she advocates for a super nuclear strike on her evil creation.) The  writer apparently has no clue about eco-politics and simply pulled his  characterizations out of thin air (to be polite) without a minute's  research (or even a dollop of common sense.) This is perhaps the laziest  writing ever perpetrated on sci-fi fans, and one of the stupidest  scripts.

The US military figures are smart and idealistic do-gooders, while their foreign counterparts are of course blundering idiots. While the South Americans' stupidity is portrayed as evil, the team of North American scientists responsible for the mess are transferred into heroes without the slightest hint of a character turn or transition. They simply realized after the fact that creating monstrous piranhas with accelerated mutating and reproductive capabilities might not have been the best way to "save the world." Wow. Well, clearly they weren't rocket scientists.
With their poorly matched lighting, the efx are the typical unconvincing low grade efx churned out for Syfy's bargain basement productions, where quantity bests quality every time. Almost every movie on the channel features efx that looks like they were rushed out by animation interns working for lunch money. You'd think someone in charge might eventually get the idea to re-use and further develop their existing wireframe animations rather than starting from scratch with every production. By pooling their already developed resources, the companies whipping up the endless slew of ogres and monster fishes might eventually come up with a convincing effect.
