Plot Summary

An ambitious, sprawling epic of social revolution, The Baader Meinhof Complex - director Uli Edel’s return to large-scale filmmaking in his homeland - goes to work on a huge canvas in vividly recreating a torrid decade of German history. After first winning plaudits for 1981's Christiane F, Edel was lured to Hollywood, helming the brilliant but devisive Last Exit to Brooklyn (1989). He then did himself no favours with Body of Evidence (1993) and has since bounced between an eclectic but mostly undistinguished assortment of projects for the small screen. His 'comeback' is reputedly the most expensive film ever made in Germany and was nominated for Best Foreign Film Oscar this year.

Review

Strange to say, for a movie pitched as an extended historical action-adventure, director Uli Edel’s equally fascinating and frustrating portrait of the formation, terrorist activities and imprisonment of the later-named Red Army Faction (RAF) from 1967 to 1977 may be too subtle for its own good.

Uli Edels’s Oscar nominated film is an epic look at Germany in the turbulent 70s. Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the yet fragile German democracy. The radicalized children of the Nazi generation lead by Andreas Baader, Ulrike Meinhof and Gudrun Ensslin are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold. And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows he’s only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

Director Uli Edel teams with screenwriter Bernd Eichinger to explore a dark period in German history with this drama detailing the rise and fall of the Red Army Faction, a left-wing terrorist organization that became increasingly active following World War II. Also known as the Baader-Meinhof Group, the Red Army Faction was formed by the radicalized children of the Nazi generatio
