The Gist: So much for stretching out one of the best rivalries in MLS. Houston and Dallas will square off for the third and final time this season even though the schedule has yet to hit the halfway point.

El Capitán, the cannon that serves as a trophy for the winner of the annual series, is up for grabs after the first two meetings ended in draws. In both the previous tilts, Houston scored second-half stoppage time goals in both games.

With neither team scoring much lately -- they were both shut out last weekend -- a dramatic goal may not be necessary to decide things. It might just take any old goal to determine a winner. In the end, though, the celebrated Mountain Howitzer will probably stay in H-town.

Why You Should Care: Dallas squandered the first two games in dramatic fashion. If they had won those two games, they would’ve taken the season series against their intrastate rivals for the first time. And Steve Morrow might still have a job on the Hoops’ bench.
As it is, new boss Schellas Hyndman’s second game in control will also be his introduction to the Texas derby. Things can only go better after last week’s dismal 1-0 loss in New York, the team’s fourth straight defeat on the road. Again playing away from home this week, the Dallas defense will be bolstered by the return of Drew Moor and Adrian Serioux from international duty.

The Hoops need the reinforcements as Houston welcomes back Dwayne De Rosario to a starter’s role, and the Canadian international will certainly be as influential in the attack as he was in the 15 minutes he played against Colorado last week. Look for De Ro to link up with Brian Ching to take advantage of the vulnerable center of defense of Dallas, specifically Duilio Davino.

Similarly, FCD marksman Kenny Cooper (7 goals) should go at the heart of the Houston defense, which will be without Best XI centerback Eddie Robinson, out with an ankle injury. Though Coop needs help from his teammates, he can be dangerous by himself, especially against Houston’s mistake-prone central pairing, Bobby Boswell and Patrick Ianni. Whether or not he can beat goalkeeper Pat Onstad, though, is another story.
