The weekend’s games kick off with Toronto FC traveling to Columbus, Ohio to take on the Crew. Columbus has dominated the rivalry for the “Trillium Cup” over the past two seasons, so Toronto FC has extra motivation to start the season off right. These two teams don’t like each other and supporters for these two teams have had problems in the past.
Toronto FC have gone through a host of changes, since the last time I wrote about the team forward Ali Gerba has been removed from the squad and is awaiting release of his contract. Also another trade has gone down as Marvell Wynne goes to Colorado Rapids in exchange for midfielder Nick LaBrocca and a 2011 third round draft pick. The Reds start their season on the road for the second straight season, last year resulted in a 3-2 win over Kansas City Wizards so maybe that is a good omen. Key players for this game will be the play of midfielder/forward Dwayne De Rosario, midfielder Julian de Guzman and goalkeeper Stefan Frei. TFC will be striker Chad Barrett and newly acquired winger Jacob Peterson due to injury. It is expected the more roster changes are ahead which is getting mixed reactions from their fans.
As for the Crew, they are returning the majority of their roster from last season. Coach Robert Warzycha is in his second full season as coach of Columbus, taking over from Sigi Schmid’s championship winning side. Big things are expected from their captain and best player midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto, as he goes so does the Crew. Other players that will be counted on are winger Robbie Rogers and defender Chad Marshall. The team will draw from the energy that their rabid supporters generate, this team plays well but gets up for games against Toronto FC.
Kamal’s Prediction: With their forth coach in as many seasons, an incomplete roster and injuries Toronto FC don’t look ready to start their season. Factor in the game is on the road against the Columbus Crew and things look even worse. I will say the final score is 2-1, even though the score line will be close the game won’t be.
