Plot
From début director Riad Sattouf comes a rollicking tale of a pair of losers who suffer the small triumphs and endless humiliations of teenage sexual longing.
While pimply wise-ass Hervé (Vincent Lacoste) and his metalhead sidekick, Camel (Anthony Sonigo) are forever fantasising over their female classmates (as well as said classmates' mothers), they're rarely ever able to go as far as actually talking to a girl, except when it's to mumble a few incoherent insults. However when Hervé finally catches the eye of the sweet but equally sex-crazed Aurore (Alice Trémolière), he's pushed to choose between his first probable girlfriend and his unquenchable libido, while dealing with a nosy mother (Noemie Lvovsky) and Camel's fears that Hervé will score before he does.
Synopsis
A tale of a pair of teens who are far removed from the cool crowd, as they suffer the endless embarrassments and minor triumphs of their first sexual experiences.
While Herve (Vincent Lacoste) and his sidekick Camel (Anthony Sonigo) are forever fantasizing over their female classmates, they're rarely able to go as far as actually talking to any of them, other than to mumble a few incoherent insults.
But when Herve inexplicably catches the eye of the sweet but equally hormone-fuelled Aurore (Alice Tremolieres), he's pushed to choose between his first probable girlfriend, his unquenchable libido, and his best friend.
Review
This one is nothing more but a funny, frank depiction of an awkward, hormone-overflowing (and, just to make it worse, braces-sporting) teenage boy named Hervé who pines after every and any girl he thinks he remotely has a shot with at school, and spends the remaining time either bitching to his equally uncool-looking best friend about not getting this girl or that or scheming together to snag the next one – all entirely delusional, of course, but so driven by lust were they that they hold out on hope and faith each time. Which makes this one entertaining romp of a film, and of course, who among us couldn't relate to at least half the stuff in the film? (Oh alright, I know, the mutual masturbation thing isn't exactly common practice among us Asians and are more likely to gross local audiences out who think boys doing anything together screams gay.)
To me, however, the funniest stuff going on is the subplot of the over-curious mother, who minds not in the least that her son masturbates, but teases her son every time she walks into his darkened room (and almost seems intent to walk in on him doing it if she could help it), much to Hervé's chagrined exasperation and protestations. It's funny, but also kind of sweet.
Anyway, the story really takes off when the unexpected happens - a really pretty girl from Hervé's class happens to like him and starts actively going after him. With the tables turned, Hervé suddenly doesn't know how to react, and instead of reciprocating and milking the girl's affection for every French kiss and sexual intercourse he could get out of it, he ... plays it ambivalent and blows hot and cold.
The French are supremely confident (we say arrogant) people; in one scene, a boy gets his girl by going up to the girl and saying, "I'm hot, let's dance," and to Hervé's chagrin, it actually works. (Of course it would fail if he had tried it himself.)
In another humorous sequence, we see how the rumour mill works in the school – the expression "Chinese whispers" comes to mind, and it's funny to see how each kid twists the message by a word here and there to create an utterly false statement fifteen messengers in. Rumours also play a part in how the kids receive their sex education from each other, and the many misconceptions the kids spew about sex will likely send you falling off your seat laughing in disbelief.
As you can gather, it is by no means a sophisticated film, and everything from the cinematography to the dialogue is very much on the nose, and often over the top slapstick. (In one scene, the sudden announcement of the death of a popular jocky kid sends the entire female population of the school sobbing and suicidal.) Like many French comedies, the pacing just goes - scenes come at ya thick and fast. Beloved French actress Emmanuelle Devos is sadly underused here, playing an unconventional teacher that is really just a cameo role. Apparently Persepolis director Marjane Satrapi cameos as a music store saleswoman but I completely missed that one. Other than that there aren't any well-known actors; Hervé is played by first-time actor Vincent Lacoste, who looks like a French version of a young Shia LaBeouf.
If there's anything to complain about, it's the synth-based score (which almost gives the film an 80's sort of feel) which I'm not too fond of. Otherwise, this is an adolescent comedy that more than hits the mark.
