Crossing Hennessey Synopsis :
Hennessy Road in Wanchai is the real Hong Kong, like Delancy in the Lower East Side is the real New York. Oilin (Tang Wei) and Loy (Jacky Cheung) live and work on Hennessy Road. She takes care of her uncles stockpile of bathtubs, and he peddles his mom's dehumidifiers. Their elders, eager to marry them off, foist them on a date. But alas, Loy is holding the torch for an old flame, and Oi-lin is waiting for her beau to get out of jail. With a delightful case and a delicious script, director Ivy Ho brings home a one-of-a-kind romantic comedy loaded with family values.

Hong Kong Movie Reviews :
The last Ivy Ho film I caught was Claustrophobia at Tokyo two years back, which I had enjoyed with its rather unconventional narrative and storyline which dealt with office romantic dalliances, with moments that were brilliant in making you reflect. Here she's gone for something more conventional and light-hearted, but that doesn't mean those reflective moments were forgotten. She brings back two actors to the silver screen and no doubt being the highlight of the film - Tang Wei of Lust, Caution fame makes a comeback of sorts, and stars opposite Jacky Cheung, who had recently returned to film (the other being 72 Tenants of Prosperity sharing the limelight with a lot of people), and both bring a little something to the table if not already making you want to root for their characters to overcome their predicament.
Ivy Ho continues to craft characters which are easily to identify with, and the actors being really natural in fleshing them to life. Jacky Cheung plays Loy, an average Joe who is resigned to coasting through life, being perpetually able to sleep anywhere, often interacting with his deceased dad (Lowell Lo) when in dreamland, and have problems getting out of bed in the morning. He's pushing past 40, yet is heavily reliant on his aunt (played by Zhu Mimi) as a primary welfare care-giver to the entire family (and seems a better mom than Loy's vain pot own, played by Paw Hee-Ching) and works in his mother's electrical appliance shop. Tang Wei's Oi Lin is nicknamed the Toilet Bowl Xi Shi, for being the beauty working in a toilet fixtures shop run by her guardian uncle and aunt, who decided it's high time she got married and make it a point to set her up on dates, which she deliberately torpedoes her chances with really awful makeup.


The title comes about with each character living on either side of Hennessy Road, and while their initial meeting set up by the parents and relatives over a Tim Sum meal is anything but a success, they soon hit it off as friends after a disastrous beginning to their friendship, and are in the know that they each both have feelings for another significant other rather than each other. For Loy, its the complication with his ex girlfriend (played by Maggie Cheung Ho Yee) who's now divorced and looking toward him as the one she allowed to get away. In Oi Lin's case, it's the countdown to the day her violent and hot headed boyfriend Xu (Andy On) finally gets out of prison for assault, but knowing this relationship is one that her relatives had frown upon and once asked that she move on.

"Mother and Child" is a new film that follows one of the biggest cinematic trends in the last decade. Starting with "Crash" in 2006 and continuing with "Babel" the next year, Hollywood has been smitten by films featuring stories of seemingly unrelated individuals, whose lives become entangled in mysterious and life-changing ways. After Paul Haggis' "Crash" won the Best Picture Oscar, a slew of other thematically similar films emerged, including "21 Grams," "The Burning Plain" and now "Mother and Child." The film been shown at both the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals and will have a limited release starting on May 7."Mother And Child" tells the overlapping stories of three women impacted by adoption. Annette Benning plays Karen, a bitter nursing home worker who gave her daughter up for adoption as a teenager. Naomi Watt's Elizabeth is a driven and commitment -phobic lawyer who was adopted at birth, never knowing who her biological parents were. Kerry Washington and David Ramsey portray a newlywed couple desperate to adopt, after learning of their inability to have a child. Through so-called plot twists, these miserable people's lives are intertwined through fate and adoption papers.


If any praise is to be given to the this film, written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia and produced by "Babel" filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, it is to be handed to the actors. Benning digs into her role with an Oscar glint in her eye. She is both fragile and fiercely independent; creating a character that is neither likable nor pleasant, at least until the castle walls come down in act three. Naomi Watts, who is proving herself to be Generation Y's Meryl Streep, gives a strong and uncompromising performance as the guarded, man-eating Elizabeth. Kerry Washington's emotional, if not histrionic, take on the mother-to-be is another standout in this starry ensemble cast. Jimmy Smits, Cherry Jones, David Morse, and S. Epatha Merkersn give fine supporting performances as well. Although the biggest surprise came from Samuel L. Jackson, whose turn as a widowed lawyer almost makes you forget "Snakes on a Plane." All of these roles are ones that scream Oscar bait and, at times, their scenes come across like the compilation clip of Best Actor nominees. The only way to ensure a win would be the addition of a handicapped character – oh wait, there's one of those too!

Kidnapper Mandarin Film Reviews :
This film, while good in its own ways, needs to be watched with an open mind and some suspension of disbelief. I think it is now a Kelvin Tong hallmark that many of his films don't make any logical sense if you peer into it on a micro-scale, and in this respect "Kidnapper" resembles his earlier effort, "Rule #1", which is similarly flawed if engaging. Similar to that film, if you can swallow some of the incredulities on show, you will be treated to some very fine editing sequences and intense pacing and acting, as performed by Christopher Lee (the Singapore-Malaysian actor, not the Dracula legend).


It's hard to be too critical of a movie whose budget is just S$1.5 million., but a lot of the technical details are gotten right in this movie. The Varicam HD looks sharp and the colors are treated in the correct way, so no one will miss the look of film (in fact, until the very end, I had thought the movie to be shot on celluloid) The performances are also all quite uniform. The storyline is good enough to be gripping, although, as I have said, screenwriters Ken Kwek and Kelvin Tong simply doesn't iron out the less convincing elements. A question that constantly run through any audience's mind is why Ah Huat the taxi-driver simply doesn't go to the police when he is down and out and totally desperate. Is it worth gambling on your son's life by doing the impossible when you can't concede to a kidnapper's request? However, like I said, "Kidnapper" is a film very well put together otherwise. Its editing is well paced and fully commendable. The performances as I have mentioned before are all quite uniform, with Lee's Ah Huat the standout. I do find the kidnapper (played by Malaysian radio DJ Jack Lim) to be a tad two-dimensional, and some characterizations too are not fleshed out enough thoroughly, but that's a criticism of a high order.


In the final analysis, "Kidnapper" is a well-made, well-conceived film thriller which will appeal to those following the local cinema scene or are interested in this sort of high adrenaline drama. Its intensity will be a draw for many viewers, so since now the movie is due to be pulled out of the theaters soon, I would urge you to rent it to see what Kelvin Tong and his team has to offer here. Although there be may implausible blemishes here and there, it cannot disguise "Kidnapper" as a A-class effort in making a thriller film never before made in Singapore.

Hong Kong Movie Reviews :
You'd probably know by now how adamant I am that the best and only way to enjoy a Hong Kong comedy, is to watch it in Cantonese, otherwise chances are a lot of jokes, especially the verbal ones, will likely be lost in translation. I had the chance to watch this during my recent trip to Hong Kong, but decided somehow to pass it up for other films. Needless to say one of the major interest why I decided to watch this film back in Singapore and compromise on having to sit through this in Mandarin (besides having a friend watch this as well), is no doubt fueled by Ronald Cheng and Charlene Choi coming out of the closet proclaiming an end to their secret union.
Gossipy news aside, I'm never convinced about singer Ronald Cheng's ability as an actor, though I had wondered how well he had fared being in a comedic leading role. I'm still not convinced actually that he's leading man material, despite having tickled my funny bone in the film, which I attribute more to writer-director Jeffrey Lau, who had gone to elicit laughs right from the get go, and had enough fuel from opening credits to plenty of sight gags, toilet humour, a string of cameo appearances, and enough of movie references here to keep you engaged throughout.
In essence, I liken Lau to Asia's version of Hollywood comedies as churned out by the Zucker siblings, where a film can stand on its own with enough craft in comedy, rather than the recent slew of relatively terrible Hollywood comedies that know nothing except to string together films of the same genre, and then poking fun at them en masse. Here though the idea is simple, and Red Cliff / Three Kingdoms form the basis and backdrop at which comedy finds its place. It's essentially a crazy little love story between an unnamed bandit (played by Ronald Cheng) who becomes Zhao Yun when the time travelling, titular Pandora's Box gets activated, and an immortal called Rose (Betty Sun) who is out to find The One true love, whom she believes to be Cheng's character.
So time travel drops them smack into the Battle of Red Cliff, and part of the fun here is to identify the whole slew of cameo appearances by China and Hong Kong actors, who seem not to mind the very bit roles (one scene or two) to lend a helping hand at boosting the film's star attraction. And these appearances come quite fast and furious, together with almost a laugh-a-minute comedy that Lau weaves into the narrative, most of which are genuinely funny, until it started to run out of steam and paid not too subtle comedic homage to Hollywood films like Titanic, The Matrix and King Kong even.
Needless to say the narrative itself is simplistic and delivered in a choppy manner, stringing together gag after gag, and the finale was quite off the mark with a sudden tribute paid to one of Lau's earlier and more famous works with Stephen Chow. Still, it did what it had set out to do, to help you relax and enjoy a rip-roaring time at the movies, so the objective's met and I've got little qualms about it since I honestly am admitting this was much better than expected, and had found myself laughing at some points with tears uncontrollable.

Hélène Berthier, niece of a famous painter, receive her children and grand children for her birthday, and take this opportunity to talk about her death, and what will happen to her uncle's collection. Once dead, Frederic, her elder son think that they'll keep the house as it his, but his brother and sister don't live in France anymore and think that it would more intelligent to sell. When I was expecting the family to be destroyed around this heritage, nothing like that happens, they all accept and the rarity in the 21 century of families having things that could belong to museums takes an end.



This film is extremely beautiful, for many reasons. First because it can touch everyone who lost someone and saw what was theirs, being sold and put in many places. Then this film is beautiful because it shows also how everyone accepts that but also suffers from what they can't keep together: family, past, heritage! To me it shows better than any Amelie, or La Vie en Rose what being French means: being thorn between the heritage of a culture and an appeal of modernity, wanting to keep your roots alive and spread toward the world. This is funny how this thought came through my mind "Why do they want to live in Beijing or New York?" suddenly being in the film, that seemed weird to me when I just lived two years and a half in London, and probably won't stay in my old country forever.



The actors are great, Edith Scob playing the extremely classy Hélène, and Charles Berling, Jeremy Regnier and Juliette Binoche are very touching and human. It's important to say, that the object are also characters in this story, and it's scary at the end to see them in the museum d'Orsay, how they lost life or are recovering some. It's important to say that this film was a project with the museum, and I think that it is brilliant to make us pay attention to the details of these objects when generally we're not. Question: is art made for museum or to live with it? People wouldn't try to steal them from museum if the answer was museums

20 Apr – Touted as the first Iban-Dayak feature film for theatrical release, "Saloi The Movie" will be making
its mark in Malaysian cinemas this May 2010. 



The story: focuses on a young man named Saloi (newcomer Julius Ejau) who tries to make it big in the city. Monita Jeff takes the director's chair (known for her short film "I Love Sarawak" which won Best Cinematography at the Astro Kirana Festival 2008). According to Borneo Post, executive producer Benny Zach said: "The film aims to teach the Iban community to be positive and to destroy all negative thinking on all things especially of those not to their understanding."
The movie would be presented in high definition (HD) as suggested by local film enthusiast Dato Sri Edmund Langgu.
Shot entirely in Sibu and Sungai Durin, "Saloi The Movie" is an Iban-language movie with Malay subtitles. The comedy is scheduled to open in cinemas this 8 May for Kuching and Sibu. Audiences in Bintulu and Miri can catch this starting this 22 May. As for cinemas in Peninsular Malaysia, its Facebook page has indicated that the producers are trying to secure screenings in Johor Bahru.

Bellary mine lords had recently created a new wave in socio-political system of Karnataka by opposing the CM with their money power. Although several forms of media had tried to throw the light on their corruption, it was not up to the mark. Now director Jacob Verghese has best depicted it onscreen through his movie Prithvi. Hats off to Puneet Rajkumar to joining his hands with director in bringing on such a serious issue on screen.

Besides the direction, Jacob Verghese has also penned story and screenplay for the movie Prithvi. It is an action-cum-romantic story, which is the second hero of the movie. Even though it deals with serious subject, the director has included almost all the commercial elements. The highlights of the movie are Puneet Rajkumar’s energetic performance, Manikanth Kadri’s music, Manju Mandovi’s dialogues, stunts and wonderful narration.
The story revolves around a DC’s attempt to stop the corruption in Bellary district and provide infrastructure to the people. The director has managed to bring out a clear picture of corruption of mine lords in Bellary without referring to any real person or event. The movie also brings out the Andhra-Karnataka border issue. With a strong storyline, director deals with satirical picture of social, political and bureaucratic system in this area. The movie starts with a flashback story and the first half is all about Prithvi getting married to Priya and joining the civil service. The second half depicts how he takes action against the mine lords.

Prithvi (Puneet Rajkumar) is an IAS aspirant, who clears the Civil Service exams and becomes a DC. Meanwhile, his father (Shrinivasmurthy) decides to get him married to Priya (Parvathi Menon), whose parents are staying in US. Happily married Prithvi joins his duty as the DC of Bellary District. He studies the social problems like drinking water, health care, which are neglected due to the corruption in the area. How he destroys anti-social elements and solves these issues will be interesting to watch on screen

It is believed that if a man dies with unfulfilled wishes or meets an unnatural death, his soul remains on earth for two reasons: i.e too much of love or too much of revenge. His soul will not leave the earth till his desires are completed. Now director Shankar B has done his latest movie Antharathma on the existence of the spirit.
Antharathma is a Kannada version of Oscar winner Hollywood movie The Ghost and Mithun Tejaswi, Vishaka Singh and Umashree have played the roles, which were reprised by Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg in the original. Even though it is a remake, with his lively narration, the director is successful in making it interesting from beginning to end.
Shankar B has chosen a good storyline for the movie Antharathma. The story is all about a soul protecting his wife from a man, who is planning to rob his amount Rs. 14 crores deposited in his bank account. Although the movie has a serious subject of supernatural, the director has also included a few comedy sequences.
 Shyam (Mithun Tejashwi) and Rohan (Rohan Gowda) are close friends. Once an amount Rs. 14 crores is accidentally transferred to Shyam's bank account and he reveals this to Rohan, who murders him in order to rob that money. But Shyam’s spirit remains on the earth to save his wife Mahi (Vishakha Singh). When she does not see him, the spirit takes Chowdamma’s (Umashri) help. How she helps him is an interesting part of the film, which should be watched on screen.

How to Be a SexStar Movie Reviews :
Fully prepared for a documentary, I found SexStar to be my brand of ludicrous. The pick-up artist is hardly a creature of sheer technique, so to present all this as mere performance to be aped is funny indeed. The jargon is utterly pointless except to highlight the little regard Hill has for womankind. The presentation sequences have a bone-headed literalness that mocks the trope. The reenactments are gamely performed, but could never be mistaken for anything but. Toward the end Hill reclines in his lips-shaped chair with a roaring caveman laugh as crayon loveletters flit across the screen. I would have you believe that I was laughing even harder.
This movie was damn hilarious! I watched it with some buddies and we had a great laugh. It's really for anyone who ever wanted to know how to attract girls but never succeeded. We've all been there and finally someone is giving us the answers. The stuff Nathan Hill says about women and how they tick is spot on. And his techniques to pick them up are just hilarious, in particular when he was using fire and ice and shake the bake – might even use them myself… the chicks in this film were really hot which made it easy to watch, especially the little brunette who name I can't remember. I'd recommend if you're in the mood for a good time and a lot of laughs.

How to Be Movie Reviews :
In my opinion, I thought this was a wonderful film for anybody who can relate. I've recently lived through this type of situation and the confusion, sadness and disjointedness Art feels trough out the film is all very... what word would be best to describe this... exact. Or almost. The film has been given the title of a comedy and, I agree. Though the production is more of a drama, you do have your sudden outbursts of laughter in those unexpected moments of comedic weirdness. I also appreciated the range of different actors in the film. It's in these types of movies you can actually see real acting talent. It's a must watch for any teen who is lost right now.
The funny thing about this film is in the first 3 minutes I'm saying to myself, that's Cedric Diggory, being the ignorant American I am. But after the 4th minute I could see no one but Art, the lovable and pathetic loser who just doesn't know how to get a handle on his life because he has no one to validate his existence. His parents loath him, his girlfriend dumps him, and his new age therapist seems to need Art more than Art needs him in the end. I came home from seeing this movie at Slamdance and described it to someone as "my life, except 20 something, and a guy, and in London, but other than that, EXACTLY my life!" The people I saw it with at Slamdance didn't get it, but they had much more "normal" upbringings. Like I said, I loved this movie because I could identify so much with it, and at the same time it was almost unbearable to watch because I saw so much of myself, the parts I'd rather leave to my own past. I commend the cast and crew for a very funny and heartfelt movie, and recommend everyone watch it with an open mind. It may not be your life, but it was someone's.
I was one of the lucky ones to see this movie at Slamdance. I absolutely loved this movie.
"This is not your typical Robert Pattinson movie. He doesn't play a good-looking, heart-throb. Robert plays Art, an insecure, confused, depressed, misfit who has no direction, no real social skills, and no support from his parents. His only love is music, but he sucks at that too. After the break up from his girlfriend, he basically looses it and has to move back in with his parents. This is his struggle to become "normal" so his parents and friends will accept and love him. He even goes to the extreme of hiring a self-help professional to help him. You will feel so sad for Art – trust me! Don't get me wrong, this movie contains endless British humor to lighten the subject up.
A wonderful independent movie with a great message. A job well done for Robert Pattinson.

Who would have guess that Ah Niu, the Malaysian Singer who gave us the popular song "The Girl across the Street, Look Over here" had always wanted to be a director instead of a singer. After 'unexpectedly' achieved success as a singer, appearing films like Summer Holiday with Richie Ren and taking six years to write the screenplay for, he had finally achieved his directorial debut with Ice Kacang Puppy Love.
He brought along a cast of Malaysian artists that had found success in respective medium in the Taiwan and Asian entertainment field. There's Lee Sinje who is well known for being the Pang Brothers' squeeze for scream queen role in The Eye and Re-cycle. There's Victor Wong, the bespectacled singer who is probably well known as the former one half duo of Wu Yin Liang Pin. There's Gary Chaw, the popular Ballads singer who gave us the soulful "Betrayal" song and Fish Leong, the popular queen of love songs who gave us many songs to choose at karaoke.
It's a wise decision to cast these well known Malaysian artists. Their star power made this film interesting to watch and these Malaysian celebrities who had done well overseas had a very apparent camaraderie that transmit well onto the big screen. It helped to create a believable friendship between them within a short time frame, allowing the script to build on other elements of the movie.



The various character designs created for them were also memorable highlight of this movie. Lee Sinjie was a strong anchor as the main love interest for this movie. Her strong performance as the tough tomboyish girl (Fighting Fish) who got her own set of troubles made it engaging to watch. Then there's Victor Wong strumming away as the neat and tidy Prince Charming who wasnt' giving his best effort to fulfill his potential. Gary Chaw hammering it up as a Malaysian Ah Beng with a super strong Malaysian Mandarin accent that goes high pitch at the end of every sentence. Last but not least, Fish Leong's Barley Ping (Barley Ice), a (almost) silent femme fatele who's constantly sucking on a ice packet drink was easily the most likable and fun character among the supporting cast.
Beside those stars mention above, Ice Kacang Puppy Love was also filled with cameo appearance by the Bruce Lee lookalike Hong Kong artist (Danny Chan who found his breakthru in Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer) and Eric Moo (who was once thought to be a Singaporean artist). Among all the cameos, Eric Moo's role as the father of "Fighting Fish" was particularly memorable as the uncouth gambler who had a few words of wisdom about letting go to the young protagonists.
