John Rabe (2010) Story:
German businessman John Rabe and his wife Dora have resided in Nanking, the Chinese capital of that time. He is the director of the Siemens subsidiary there. The thought of transferring management to his successor Flies and returning to Berlin is a burden for him. He has grown fond of the country and he knows he is a man of influence there; in the Berlin headquarters he would be just be one of many.

During the farewell ball in his honor, Nanking is bombarded by planes of the Japanese forces, which have just conquered Shanghai. Panic breaks out and Rabe has the company gates opened to bring the families of his workers into safety. Based on a true story, John Rabe tells the tale of a German businessman who rescued more than 200,000 civilians during the so-called "Nanking Massacre" in China

Based on a true story about a German businessman who saved more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanjing massacre in 1937-38.

May 02, 2010 – It focuses upon the experiences of John Rabe, a German businessman who used his Nazi party membership to construct a Safety Zone in Nanking, similar to the one in Shanghai, and save over 200,000 Chinese from the Nanking massacre, which was being committed by the invading Imperial Japanese Army after the 1937 Battle of Nanking. Based upon Rabe's wartime diaries, shooting for the film commenced in 2007 [1], and it premiered at the 59th Berlin Film Festival on February 7, 2009. A large amount of artistic license was taken with the movie.

It won for Best Film, Best Actor, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Lead actor Ulrich Tukur also won the 2009 Bavarian Film Awards for Best Actor.

John Rabe (2010) SYNOPSIS

Oscar-winning director Florian Gallenberger explores the crucial role that foreigners played in helping countless Chinese escape a fate worse than death in this period docudrama concerning the 1937 invasion of Nanking by the ruthless Japanese Imperial Army. Casually known by historians as the "Rape of Nanking," the relentless assault on the then-Chinese capitol found countless men, women, and children slaughtered with a ferocity that shocked the entire world. Yet, despite the violence that surrounded them, some people refused to sit by silently as the innocents perished. One of those people was German engineer and Nazi party member John Rabe, who earned the nickname "The Schindler of China" for constructing a vast safety zone in which nearly a quarter of a million civilians sought sanctuary. Ulrich Tukur, Daniel Bruehl, Dagmar Manzel, and Steve Buscemi star.

 John Rabe (2010) REVIEW

The German actor Ulrich Tukur brings an understated intensity and psychological depth to the title role of “John Rabe,” a sweeping historical film that exalts a largely unsung real-life hero who risked his life to do the right thing. A historical horror story from the 1930s, John Rabe could have been made in that decade. The movie, named for a German industrialist who helped save perhaps 250,000 Chinese civilians from rampaging Japanese troops, melds stark reality and sentimental fiction in a way that lost its edge decades ago.

The story begins as Rabe receives the information that he is being replaced by a Nazi bureaucrat and is being called back to Berlin. But during his farewell party, the Japanese bomb the city and his replacement flees. Instead of leaving Nanking, as almost everyone else, including his beloved wife, Dora (Dagmar Manzel), does, Rabe decides to remain and serve as the head of a committee of Europeans and Americans who persuade the Japanese to establish a safety region for civilians. His first courageous sign is to raise the Nazi flag to signal friendship and divert diving warplanes.

In John Rabe, German writer-director Florian Gallenberger naturally assigns him the lead role in this movement. He constructs a generously mounted, essentially outdated war melodrama around the events of 1937, bringing in moments of comedy, danger, intrigue, fury, horror and even a slight hin barely a whiff, really of romance on a couple of occasions. With its solid performances and sweeping set pieces in which Japanese planes swoop through the streets like mad, fire-spitting bats, “John Rabe,” has its visceral moments. But it is also burdened by manipulative clichés of a screenplay in which exposition outweighs character development. Inspired by Rabe’s diaries, from which short excerpts are read, it tells the story almost completely from a Western point of view.

From the outset of “John Rabe” you are uncomfortably aware of watching a wartime melodrama that, despite its honorable intentions, will throw in any emotional trick to keep you engaged. The 134-minute film jams in much information, incidents and characters without losing any entertainment value. And luckily its heroism isn't pumped up or glorified. Sometimes, under extreme circumstances, people do the right thing.

One of the few films so far this year that deserves to be called an epic. Great acting and superb sets and cinematography make this a great success

Breakthrough feature film director Florian Gallenberger is off to a great start with this 130-minute extravaganza featuring first rate performances and cinematography from an accomplished cast and crew. After his 2001 Oscar winning short “I want to be…” (Quiero ser) he had the street cred to grab some backing and he did exactly that.

Ulrich Tukur does a corker of a job playing John Rabe and has collected several German film awards for his work. This movie is based on the true story of Rabe, a corporate executive for German mega-corporation Siemens. Siemens was bringing world-class electrification and telephony to the Chinese port center of Nan King when the Japanese attacked in 1937 as a pre-emptive move towards WWII.

Steve Buscemi (“Fargo,” “Reservoir Dogs”) plays Dr. Robert Wilson, one of the western educated doctors caught in the middle of the thousands of brutal deaths and mutilations visited on the virtually defenseless men, women and children of Nan King. As Wilson and other quickly exhausted their medical supplies and the bodies were piled like cordwood they agreed to form a safe zone where international law could provide some protection. But this required sacrifices and compromises none of them was sure they could make.

Daniel Bruhl (lead actor in the spectacular indie production “Goodbye Lenin” and Private Zoller in “Inglourious basterds”) plays doctor Georg Rosen. Rosen and Rabe are depicted as two of the more calm and rational characters in the film whereas the Buscemi character, Robert Wilson, is the Hotheaded American who wants action, and fast. Perfect casting on all counts, another great role for Buscemi as he expands the scope of his work.

“John Rabe” is anti-war film and at the same time a film exalting the heroism of the common person. The horror of war is never more profound than at the beginning of a conflict, especially in the context of a surprise attack. Pearl Harbor was like that and Nan King was as well. Although both were surprise attacks, Nan King was unparalleled in the ferocity of the suffering directed to civilians. Ridiculously outnumbered, the Japanese had to strike terror into the hearts of the Chinese population in order to control the sprawling nation. They would never control any more than a fraction of the country so they felt they had to make a big impression in a short time.

The western expatriates caught in this had two reactions. The first reaction was to get out while they were still alive. The second reaction was to stay with the suffering population and relieve what suffering they could. Not only are John Rabe and his fellow medical professionals heroes for staying behind and helping, they somehow managed to bring Yankee ingenuity to bear on the situation where few solutions presented themselves. Rather than being a film of how westerners won the war with bombs it is a film of how westerners won the hearts and minds of ordinary people when the rest of the world turned their backs and walked away.

The sets and costumes in this film stir the imagination. This was a time when western technology was just being integrated into traditional Chinese life and the rickety warehouses and crude structures that hold the state-of-the-art power generation and communication apparatus truly inspire the imagination. The action photography complete with exact reproductions of the feared Japanese Zero aircraft are as exciting as they are fearsome. A little bit of computer graphics goes a long way in a film like this and the sinking of the passenger ship by enraged Japanese bombers as it leaves the dock is one the best, and saddest, war scenes ever films.

This is a work that monumentally underscores the heartbreak and hopelessness of war with some of the best cast and crew work to be seen this year.
