MacGruber (2010) Story:

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live's clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that's been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he's the only one tough enough for the job.

Assembling an elite team of experts--Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)--MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber. --© Universal
As the relationships move toward a resolution, the tension builds expertly. The final sequence at a train station benefits from superb editing. By the end of this modest but compelling film, viewers are likely to feel at once drained and deeply satisfied.

MacGruber (2010) SYNOPSIS

Another Saturday Night Live skit makes the transition to the big screen with this Rogue Pictures production. Will Forte returns as MacGruber, a comedic spin on the '80s TV character MacGyver. Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer, and Ryan Phillippe co-star.

MacGruber (2010) REVIEW

The skit on Saturday Night Live goes a little something like this: MacGruber (Will Forte), a character mocking Richard Dean Anderson's iconic MacGyver persona from the popular '80s TV series, is in some dire situation needing to diffuse a bomb with less than 30 seconds to detonate using nothing but household products (paper clips, duct tape, etc.) to save the day. The problem is, he's such a self-absorbed idiot and a total mockery of the All-American Hero that he always manages to screw it up, blowing himself, and usually Kristin Wiig and that week's celebrity host, to smithereens. The whole skit usually runs about three minutes long, about half of which is devoted to MacGruber's theme song. I've never found the skit to be anything more than slightly amusing and couldn't imagine how they could possibly stretch it out to a full-length movie. But they did, and I'm happy to report that they actually pulled it off, delivering gross-out comedy that's actually better than the source material and a great homage/mockery of the '80s action hero.

MacGruber (Forte), the greatest American Hero who ever lived, comes out of semi-retirement to help the U.S. government (Powers Booth) track down and retrieve a stolen nuclear bomb that's set to blow up America. The bomb's been stolen by this bad guy named Cunth (Val Kilmer), and it's up to MacGruber and his elite team of misfits (Wiig and Ryan Phillippe) to stop him.

MacGruber works as a gross-out comedy/action movie on a few levels. On the one hand, it's a comedy that relies on foul language and misuse of celery sticks for laughs; on the other, it's a great spoof on '80s action heroes (think Hot Fuzz rather than Hot Shots), as not only is MacGruber poking fun at MacGyver, but also at other iconic '80s action heroes, including Sylvester Stallone's Rambo (particularly Rambo III) and the majority of characters played by Chuck Norris. Throw those two elements together in one movie and the result is an over-the-top action/comedy that's so laugh-out-loud funny (yet so ridiculously stupid) you can't help but enjoy.

But this is not a film for everyone. To put it lightly, it's a film seemingly written by and for 13-year-old boys. That's the type of comedy that's at play here, the kind of comedy that boys in junior high will find gut-bustingly hilarious, the kind of comedy that works due to how juvenile and crude it is, the kind of comedy that can't even be mentioned in this review due to adult subject matter. It's an R-rated comedy in the way that only a teenage boy could find hilarious, and yet amidst the bloody violence and in-the-gutter toilet humor, MacGruber retains a level of innocence that carries the film from being just an excuse to swear and crack sex jokes to something that's extremely funny without being entirely offensive.

Forte's take on MacGruber is spot-on, and it's the attention to detail in his '80s persona that carries the film. From his mullet to his flannel/vest combination, from his contemporary '80s soundtrack to the way he carries his ejectable car stereo (cassette) everywhere he goes, MacGruber is the '80s action star personified with the I.Q. of a shoe and the mouth of a teenager. Wiig plays the clueless love interest very well, and fans of her type of humor (as seen on SNL) will dig what she does here. Phillippe and Booth are the only two characters playing it straight here, and while you might not expect this of Phillippe, he actually rocks the soldier persona like a pro -- I wouldn't be surprised if we see him taking on more action-centric roles from here on out. The big surprise is Kilmer's take on Cunth (see? 13-year old humor); the surprise is that the character and Kilmer's portrayal of him was somewhat bland. Not to say that seeing Kilmer play the villain wasn't funny, as it was an excellent casting decision, but the villainous Cunth could have been played by anybody.

MacGruber is a funny ride into the ridiculous. It's not a perfect comedy; the amount of jokes that fall flat are equal to those that work, but the jokes that do work overshadow those that don't. If toilet humor in an R-rated setting isn't something you find funny, and the mockery of the '80s-era action hero isn't something you can appreciate, then MacGruber is not for you.

Unruly dialogue, early eighties fashion, mullets, and explosions (can’t forget about the explosions) dominate the 88 minute run time of Jorma Taccone’s MacGruber. It’s been a while since “Saturday Night Live” has had the courage to produce a feature version of one of their skits, and they decided to take the plunge with the MacGyver inspired knock-off. MacGruber is transformed from a mediocre 30 second sketch to an amazing action satire complete with the presence of Powers Boothe, because no eighties action movie is complete without “The Boothe”!

The overall story centers on a retired MacGruber (Forte) living as a monk in Ecuador. His former commanding officer Colonel James Faith (Boothe) enlists him to fight the evil Dieter Von Cunth (Forte), who has a nuclear warhead and is attempting to kill the President. MacGruber assembles a rogue team including his trusty sidekick Vicki St. Elmo (Wiig) and a young soldier named Dixon Piper (Phillippe) to stop Cunth from executing his plan.
The Good:

* Val Kilmer: Kilmer turned in a solid performance as the deliciously evil Cunth. He has the archetype of the eighties action villain down to a science but doesn’t portray the character in a cartoonish way. He’s one of the best things this film has to offer.
* Powers Boothe: It’s no secret that this movie is a parody of several films but Powers Boothe plays his character completely straight. It’s like he was transplanted from Red Dawn or Rapid Fire and dropped directly into MacGruber. Either he wasn’t in on the joke or he took his role very, very seriously.
