As many fans recall just two years ago to the day of this match, Spain finally broke through and won a major tournament for the second time and lifted the European Championship trophy. If they are to go one step further now and break their World Cup tradition of failure they are going to have to significantly ramp up their performances, starting against their peninsular neighbours the solid Portugal and their defend first, attack later philosophy.

Fernando Torres was the one who scored the goal in the final played in Vienna back in 2008, but his performances in South Africa have been synonymous with that of the rest of the Spanish team. He and many of his much heralded colleagues have started the tournament rather sluggishly and look like they are still recovering from the shock of losing to Switzerland in their opening match.

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso is a doubt with a sprained ankle, so Javier Martinez is set to replace him. Reserve defender Raul Albiol is definitely out of this match.

Portugal’s Deco is available again for Portugal after a hip injury, so coach Carlos Queiroz must decide if to include him. Hugo Almeida or Liedson will come back into the team.

Portugal have played out two boring goalless draws with a mauling of North Korea placed in between. Coach Carlos Queiroz has opted for a different striking formation in all three of their games so far, but while he ponders how to get goals at one end, he is losing no sleep about a defensive line that has conceded just once in their last 12 matches. The Portuguese have only beaten Spain five times in 32 encounters, but interestingly they have lost this fixture just one time since 1958.

The real pressure is on Vicente Del Bosque though, who has the obligation to lead Spain to their first ever World Cup success, particularly as many believe he has one of the best ever squads at his disposal. Del Bosque was the man at the helm when Real Madrid could last claim to be Europe’s leading footballing force, yet he was sacked by the club after four years in the job just a day after leading Real to their 29th title, episode that still is considered to be shocking by the Spanish media and public opinion.
