Film News | Spike Jonze Collaborating With The Arcade Fire On SciFi Short, Terry Gilliam On Live Performance|

Sci-Fi & Fantasy, USA & Canada
Canadian indie rockers The Arcade Fire have good taste in film. It shouldn't come as that much of a surprise as their music has certain cinematic qualities to it but they're on rather a hot streak right now.

First up, their August 5th show at Madison Square is going to be webcast live. Which is pretty much the norm for big shows these days but making it a big deal is that Terry Gilliam is directing the video component. That starts at 10pm EST and can be viewed here. Exciting as that is, Gilliam's involvement came about fairly last minute so I wouldn't expect crazy bells and whistles from this.

Where you can expect a full dose of the film maker's personality however, is in a new short film the band is collaborating on with Spike Jonze. Word is that Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler played some of the music from their new album - The Suburbs, listening to it as I type this and it's damn good, a return to form after the very disappointing Neon Bible - for Jonze and the visual ideas he kicked out were very much in line with some of Butler's own, so Butler, Butler's brother and Jonze sat down to hammer out a screenplay, which they have since shot in Austin. No word on how long it will be yet - though not feature length - or any plot details beyond that it's a science fiction story involving a group of fifteen year olds. Given the album that triggered it, I'd imagine they're suburban fifteen year olds. More as we get it.
